what to do? I am upset, and am probably going to have to suck it up. [More:]I left an outboard motor outside by the back door to be cleaned up before use and tested. It has vanished. When I mentally tracked it, I have a strong sense that the only visitor around that time was a neighbor kid who comes by when he's broke, looking for work. He had a busted iphone screen and needed cash. I had work for him, but it had to be supervised, so told him to come on Saturday. Haven't seen him in 2 Saturdays, about since it vanished. It's something he could easily have sold for the money needed, and it's just really resonating. Is there any approach I can take?

Not only am I pissed at losing something needed to make my son's visit fun (fishing) but my neighbor hood has been really safe, and now I'm going to have to start locking everything up, which is a drag. grarrrrrr.
Oh, that SUCKS.

Have you filed a police report? I was following a big story from the Vineyard a while back, where stuff like this kept happening and happening. In a few months, police on some other errand stumbled across a giant stash of the stuff in a family garage. The parents claimed not to even know the kid had the stuff there. Anyway, most of it hadn't been sold yet so people were able to get their property back. If nothing else, they'll want to know to keep their eyes out for other weird stuff.

Beyond that, I have no ideas, but it's awful not to be able to trust your neighbors.

sucks. especially with the double whammy with the loss of the item and the need to recalibrate.

we have this kid who comes around as well (who also needs money for his phone often) and has probably stolen/resold a couple things (3g dongle etc.) and it's like he puts on such a convicingly honorable front and we don't *really* know where the things/money went... we don't really cut him off but more like act normal but trust less internally, don't leave him alone in a room with stuff in it, etc.

The police came and took a report. Thanks for letting me vent; just a bad feeling about my home being at risk.

Oh, no! What a shame. Losing the thing itself is rotten, of course, but the sense of serenity and confidence in your neighborhood is an even bigger loss.

I'm sorry to hear this. I don't know what else to say, I'm sure the feeling of losing trust in your neighbours is awful.
