"Emery board" scratching posts:: yay or nay? I keep seeing those "emery board" cat scratchers in stores. Trilby has nearly destroyed the cat scratcher I got him and I was wondering if I should get him an emery board as it would save me from having to cut his claws. Anyone tried them? Or rather, has your cat tried them?
My cats will shred one of those cardboard scratching things in a couple of months (which is fine, they're meant to be replaced), but I got them an emery scratcher in December and neither one of them has touched it. It LOOKS, texture-wise, just like the corrugated-cardboard ones, but I guess it feels different to them.

I've done some googling and am finding mostly negative reviews of this product. The good reviews mostly smell really, really fake. I might keep checking into it, but at this point think the cat emery board is a no-go.

Yeah, the odds of a cat using a cat-product for its intended use are fairly low.

On a side note, I stopped using the cardboard scratcher for my cats and replaced it with one that uses some sort of sisal texture in place of the cardboard. It lasts longer, and they like it just as much. Doesn't do much for trimming their nails, but it keeps them from shredding furniture.

We just have shredded furniture. Looked at from less of a species-ist point of view, it's beautiful that way.

Trilby's very good about not scratching anything but his cat scratcher. But he really goes to town on that. So I will need to replace it soonish. Maybe I'll post to AskMe for cat scratcher recommendations.

These are the only cat scratchers we've found that our cats will use which are not instantly destroyed. (This has also saved our furniture, though it came too late for our speakers.) I.e., sisal and carpeted posts are the way to go.

I was given an emory scratcher as a hand me down from a friend whose cat wouldn't touch it and my four cats wouldn't use it either, which is sort of a first because they otherwise claw up everydamnthinginthehouse with abandon.

The horde's very favorite scratchers are the corrugated cardboard ones (remember to flip yours over to the unused side before you toss it) but this curved sisal and carpeted scratcher is a very close second and it's holding up extremely well. It's at least 3 years old and still looks as it did when I purchased it new. It doesn't shed little bits of itself everywhere either.
