So what type of footwear would you wear with a very plain, chocolate brown sweater dress? [More:]I got a nice dress, but I didn't really consider that I have no shoes that go with it.
Well, see, I've never worn a dress, so...

I'm afraid I can't be much help. Sorry 'spode :-P

What length is it? And is the skirt straight or full?
posted by deborah 08 February | 21:20
Oh, it's a bit above the knee and is reasonably straight.
Let's see...Yep, this one.

Er what's the occasion? That tells me more.

Just every day, dark reddish brown (or dark reddish color BUT NOT BROWN anything) with a slight heel.

You could dress that up with heels or Fuck You Designer! boots, but stay dark and in the reddish hues.

Nice dress, BTW. Looks like a good fit for your coloring.

yay! Dresses!

Oh, it's just a casual dress to wear around. The step above complete slob, which is my normal attire. I just realised that all of my non-sneaker footwear is brown or black and I must remedy that.

with a very plain, chocolate brown sweater dress

Shoes that look like cupcakes, obviously.

This time of year, I would wear black tights with either black knee-high boots, or black "booties" (ankle-high boots).

I agree with TPS. You might also be able to do Mary Janes.
posted by occhiblu 08 February | 22:06
Some dark red Mary Janes, maybe?
posted by gaspode 08 February | 22:08
Dark red MJ's would look great with that. I agree with TPS about the tights.

I agree with BoringPostcards.

and, I also am relieved that this isn't askme, where my non-helpful posts would be in questionable taste.

Dark red MJs would be pretty.

Gray or purple boots or low heels is what I wear with my dark brown dress. I also have a pair of cognac flats that look good.
I wouldn't go black because that dark color seems like it might be too close but not close enough to black and might look off.

That's funny - two weeks ago I bought almost the same dress, but this one with more of a turtleneck collar.

I wear it with fun tights and my tall black boots. VERY comfy.

The booties idea is good, too - I've been wanting to wear this with my ankle boots + slouchy socks over the tights, but I don't have any slouchy socks, and I think without them it looks a little weird.

I like these or these booties!

Plus, on sale and comfy!
posted by crush-onastick 08 February | 22:53
Yeah boots. Heavy tights - you could even do patterned tights, fun! - and boots. Any boots would work, really.

gray boots
purple heels

patterned tights are essential, yes.

hrmmmm...
posted by gaspode 08 February | 23:21
heh. maybe I'll just go with the cupcake shoes.

BP.

Casual wear? No shoes. But you did ask what *I'd* wear ;) I understand this is markedly different from what most people would wear with that dress.

I have a dark brown sweater dress and often wear it with army green tights and grey boots. But I like color so YMMV.

'pode those purple suedes are YUMMY!

I agree with everyone else - stick to dark reddish browns or purples, or maybe army green.

If you want something that you can also wear with jeans and/or leggings and other skirts, you could also go with a low-heeled knee length riding/military style boot. These have been all the rage recently and as we're going into spring buying season, you maybe able to find great deals on them. I have a black pair that I wear nearly everywhere in winter.

I'd stick with textured / matte finishes though, in any style you pick. Suede is good.

Mary Janes in any style are amazing. I have a favourite adorable pair of red maryjanes in a high platform / chunky sole style that I found in a thrift shop, of all places. They are neither teetery nor uncomfortable, they simply look smashing with many things. :)

Likely a complementary shade in tights and either little or tall brown or beige boots in a somewhat different shade/texture. Also I'd add a long gold chain necklace, but that's just me.

I feel like a lot of women on metachat have similar or complementary tastes.

I got some army green and some grey tights to go with. Still contemplating shoes. I must admit, purple was my first thought, but I'm throwing other ideas around (I like color too, misskaz!)

And yeah, a long necklace. Hadn't thought about jewelry yet, beyond my turquoise earrings.
posted by gaspode 09 February | 15:56
I also vote for knee high boots or mary janes with some snazzy tights.
posted by deborah 09 February | 16:22
You could wear navy, grey, purple or mustard colored tights with boots. Nice dress. Whose socks are you knocking off?

Man, women are complicated to dress.

Shoes that look like cupcakes.

Men are harder to dress because they have more limited options. If you don't like something but it's the only thing in the Man Canon that fits you, well though tits.
