I am in search of an object. Something that will delight me with its presence. Something that I can hold or sit with. Something I will come to cherish. I have no idea what it is yet but I'll know it when I see it. Suggestions?

"You might as well give a mime a cellphone." I haven't been a fan of "Get Fuzzy" for a long time, but today's comic (in a newspaper I got for the coupons) tickled me the way that Satchel casually explained why that cliché no longer applies in the age of smartphones...

People who were born in the 1990s aren't supposed to go out to bars and get drunk legally. They're supposed to watch Barney tapes, and play with Power Rangers, and shit. WTF, space-time continuum??

Wednesday 3-Point Update 1. The latest Spring Awakening tour came to my burg last night. The list of cities includes mostly tank towns, other than a few days in LA (at the Pantages). There seemed to be a LOT of young sorta affluent types that seem to be following the show around the country. I could be wrong, but the audience was mostly in their 20's and I have never seen any of these people before. TPS, anyone you know in this cast?Read more...

This is another pronunciation thread pjern's comment in his post the other day about pronunciation reminded me of one of my favorite things: local pronunciations of names and places that seem wrong, wrong, wrong, but have been mangled over such a long period that the local version is the only way to pronounce it, forever and ever amen.

Please calm my anxieties. My partner and I are planning a wedding, at the location we currently live, which means it's going to be 3-4 hours away (by car) for about 80% of our guests. We are trying to figure out what to do about inviting children. In an ideal world, children would not be invited; in the we're-asking-a-lot-of-people-to-travel-kinda-far-for-a-whole-weekend world we actually inhabit, we're thinking that inviting out-of-town kids but not in-town kids might be a viable compromise. What musician am I thinking of.... Some months ago I saw a musical act on The Colbert Report, which involved an overweight black man who wore a retro-style double-breasted suit and fedora. His band members were all female and they were all kitted out in retro skirt suits and fedoras as well. I am sure I've heard his music on the radio too but have never managed to catch the name. Who is this singer?

What music to help my 17-year-old son learn to play the piano? He plays jazz guitar beautifully by ear and with fake books. He knows basic music theory. Now he wants to learn how to read music (finally) on the piano. But he doesn't want to learn via a "baby book." What should he start with? I just ordered a book of simplified Bach pieces. Anything else? I play the piano at the level of intermediate Beethoven sonatas but I started at age 6. I need "cool" stuff for him that isn't too hard for a real beginner at piano. Thanks.

Picky or just following the dictates of his nature? Trilby has a odd little preference I've been wondering about. If I put his cat bed on the kitchen floor, he never, ever uses it.
