So how many times do you wear a pair of jeans before washing it? Assuming normal wear, not excessive sweating, spills etc.
I wait until they can stand up on their own.

I ask because my husband (who does the laundry) revealed that he washes his jeans every time he wears them. I was dumbfounded. He's not particularly sweaty or smelly (he showers much more than I do) and seemed skeeved when I said that I wore mine upwards of 5 times before I washed them.

For work I have 3 pairs of jeans for 5 days of work.

Day 1: Pair A [only person in office, so no one tells I wear the same pair of jeans two days in a row]
Day 2: Pair A
Day 3: Pair B
Day 4: Pair C
Day 5: Paid A [laundry day]

Then again, I am the lone female in my office and the boys seem to wear the same pairs of pants for weeks on end.

Probably about 4 times.

I'd say two to three - more if they're newer. I'm currently operating on one year old pair. They feel more stretched out (especially in the knees) after two days than a newer pair would.

Once. They feel way too gross to wear a second time. If I'm working in the yard or something I'll grab a dirty pair out of the hamper since they're just going to get more dirty but I'd never go to work in clothes that I've worn before.

100% denim? I'm going to go with an average of seven times, because those boys shrink in the wash. I'm sure ten isn't unusual. My cords and jean like pants of mixed cotton/who knows what get washed around every three times. Work pants = one wearing. Sweat pants/leggings = one wearing.

I wear them until there's noticeable dirt on them (mud from a rainy day, parts of my lunch, etc.), which is almost always 4-5 times.

At least 2 or 3. I only get to wear them on the weekends/evenings, so they really don't get a lot of wear.

I used to be someone who washed everything after I wore it, even if it was a sweater over some other stuff and I had it on for all of an hour. At some point over the last few years I realized that it was kind of a modern anomaly to do that, and not that green, to boot. Up until the 50s and the advent of the automatic washer and, perhaps even more importantly, the dryer (which freed people from clothesline labor)...people just did not do this. And even then it took forever for the technology to be as widespread as it is. We hung our clothes out well into the 1970s, and now I have some crunchy friends who have returned to it today. In the old days, you owned fewer clothes, washed them less, but hung them on clothes-horses or hangers in between wearings and spot-cleaned, aired, or brushed them out to keep them looking good. To some degree it's true that older dresses and suits were easier to maintain because they were better-built clothes to begin with, of more durable fabric that didn't look worn immediately.

In addition, the more you wash your clothes, the faster they fade and wear out.

I shower every morning, work in an office, and generally live a clean life, so my clothes aren't really going through a lot by being worn. Now, instead of tossing everything into the laundry automatically I evaluate whether something actually needs a washing at this point. A lot of sweaters don't need washing after every wear. Some trousers don't (wool ones, for instance - you can just brush or lint-roll them and re-hang them to preserve the creases). Suit jackets and skirts, worn over several layers of undergarments, usually don't. And weekend clothes - well, my jeans and sweatshirts can make it through most of a weekend with me - in between workout clothes and PJs they aren't on my body that much anyway.

In the summer when they get all sweaty, I might wash them after every wear. Otherwise, every 4th or 5th wear.

I wear them until they're dirty. Sometimes that's after 1 wear, sometimes 10.
posted by galadriel 15 November | 16:15
I'll wear mine like 5 or 6 days, unless I get them visibly dirty, like muddy knees or food from cooking on them.
posted by danf 15 November | 16:22
I don't wash them until they are visibly dirty or smell bad. I do a visual inspection and a sniff test before putting them on.

This is me too. For jeans that are just knock-around [i.e. not ones I wear to work] I might wash them every month or so.

Me three. It depends on if an item is dirty or not. I rarely leave the house, so jeans are worn for two to four hours at a time. Admittedly, I tend to wear the same shirt/sweats/capri (depending on the time of year) combo for several days in a row, but that's only at home and depends on if it's hot or cool.

Too damn many. I think I may need to switch over to low-rise jeans, since these "classic rise" ones always hang out by my hips anyways after, oh, an hour. I can't figure out if the only-2%-spandex ones are the ones that suck, or the ones that had like 198% polyester did. I think the former. I only have three pairs, and let me tell you: I am 5'7", and there is NO GODDAMN REASON WHY I SHOULD BE WEARING THE "SHORT" LENGTH, DO YOU HEAR ME???

Just another reason that you're at the top of my shit list, Old Navy.

Rule #1: Jeans should not have polyester in them.
posted by amro 15 November | 18:23
I had thought that too, but given that those jeans not only did not disintegrate (I'm looking at you, Tommy Hilfiger) but did not sag at nearly the alarming rate of these... well, color me surprised.
posted by Madamina 15 November | 18:32
Two or three times. Unless I'm really desperate...
posted by JoanArkham 15 November | 19:22
Honestly? 6 or 7 times... they don't feel right until the second wear at the earliest, due to laundry-shrinkage.
posted by malapropist 15 November | 19:25
Gaspode, I'm with your husband. Maybe two times. Three is stretching it.

This is because I am a large, sweaty, stanky man and I am rather uptight about odors and personal hygiene, which I freely admit is a product of culture, of having grown up in the USA. And a product of years spent in the crowds of NYC.

The thought of going around in tight quarters in pants that smell of scrotum or asscrack horrifies me.

Once or twice. You mean I'm actually cleaner than most people? I thought I was the slob.
posted by Eideteker 15 November | 20:53
I can't really wear jeans more than once even if they're clean since they get so baggy after the first wear. My jeans that fit fine this morning are so baggy right now that they barely stay on my butt. If I wore jeans to work for a second day, I'd be holding them up with one hand all day.
posted by octothorpe 15 November | 21:05
Sniff test here too. Usually three wearings or so (though if you rub the insides of the jeans with a Bounce sheet or two, even letting them sit in there over night, you can get an extra wearing out of 'em). Four days is usually max between showers. (Maybe this is why I have no friends.)
posted by Pips 15 November | 21:50
4-5 times, depending on what I do in them. Like others, I don't assume that something needs washing just because it's been worn - I evaluate when I take an item off whether it goes into the laundry basket or back in the wardrobe.
posted by dg 15 November | 22:14
Two or three times because they become too loose.
posted by LoriFLA 15 November | 22:52
Two or three times, depending. If I've been doing yardwork or hiking in the woods everything I wear goes immediately into the wash when I get inside - this along with a couple of other preventative measures is why I no longer get poison ivy constantly and instead only a couple of times a year. I'm really allergic and there's a lot of it around. If I'm not doing those things, I wear them until they're really dirty or too loose, which is usually 2 - 3 times.
posted by mygothlaundry 15 November | 23:15
I wash everything except my bras after one wearing.

Out of the dryer, my jeans are too... I dunno, not too tight, exactly, but too structured, too rigid and crunchy to be really comfortable. After a full day's wear, they feel softer. After two days' wear, they feel soft and easy, but they also stretch out at the knee and butt and crease at the hip.

So I spritz those spots with water and let them dry overnight. The drying fibers pull in just enough to feel like they do after the first wearing: perfect.

Um. I never mentioned that to anyone before, I don't think. But it works!

They and my sweatshirts are the big exception to my usual rule of washing things (or dry cleaning them) after first or second wearing. I'm in the camp of "not until they smell or have visible stains." And as I am a lucky very low sweating person, that usually means, not until there are visible stains.
posted by bearwife 16 November | 15:20
Yeah, not until they smell or are actually dirty with something - dirt, food, whatever. If I can't remember the last time I washed them, I'll toss them in. I'd guess every 6-8 weeks, maybe? But then I only wear each pair a couple of times a week.
