This is definitely in my top ten list of most surreal internet moments I've ever had A little while back I posted that the Onion's "Jean Teasdale" had gotten a Twitter account to promote her book, and commented that I "hoped she wouldn't do it forever because it was almost too much, like having Christmas every day".
[More:]
Then yesterday I saw she'd twittered these messages:

Some1 on MetaFilter discovered my Twitter acct & it said (I don't know if user was male or female)...

I emailed a friend, who is also a big Jean follower (as in, we've seriously discussed Jean's menstrual cycle) and he said it made his head explode.
lol

way to go

Welcome to Twitter. The flattest-world place on the internet.

I don't use Twitter at all — I'm just following Jean's activity. This means she found my MetaChat post about her and, since she refers to me as a MetaFilter user, that she understands the relationship between MetaChat and MetaFilter.

Jean....has gained sentience? Is this like when Sky Lab became self aware? Do you suppose Jean will let us live?

Have I mentioned that I have a real-life Jean Teasdale nearby? Because daaaamn.

Mark Zuckerberg stopped me outside of the theater last night and swore that he is not nearly as much of an asshole as the movie made him out as.

No, that didn't really happen.

Wouldn't it be trippy if Jean joined MetaChat and MetaFilter and posted among us?

I'm not sure she does understand the relationship - sounds like she has 'em mixed up. In any case, if all the real life IDs of MeFites especially lurking readers rather than just posters - were suddenly revealed, we'd see we have a fair number of people from the media in our company. One thing about celebrities and artists, as well, is that they tend to be obsessive self-Googlers and don't miss much that people say about them.

But I do enjoy this direct-exchange aspect of Twitter. Being able to have one-to-one contact with some of my admired figures is a really neat little thrill. It lets you penetrate the many screens that keep people apart, and lets you connect in a very undemanding way based only on interests that are shared, or a good turn of phrase.

I love Jean Teasdale's website. It's the first example I've seen of ironic Geocities design.

Yes, the URL is a classic!

Not that surreal -- this is bog-standard internet interactive marketing technique.

I do, however, think that the staff members, er, "helping" Jean with her feed are deliberately misunderstanding the MeCha/MeFi relationship in a way designed to highlight Jeanness, if you get what I mean. Or this may just be Poe's Law in another context.

If she refers to me as a Metafilter member, more people will know what she means, because of course MeFi is way higher profile than MetaChat. At the same time it's very Jean to get the designation wrong.

I think the latter is way more likely than the former, or even just that the writers really, genuinely don't grok it. You'd have to be paying attention to know the difference.

Hm, this has made me interested in who writes her, and I found some interesting stuff by/about the writer, Maria Schneider. MediaBistro interview, her own personal Twitter, her cartoon site Pathetic Geek Stories.
