Listening to MetaFilter's Own filthy light thief's Sunday Morning techno radio show (which he does under the alternate alias of Paul the Sasquatch... he makes these amazing MeFi posts AND has a life and 17 other side activities... I can't even wake up on Sunday Morning!) and I was wondering: whatever happened to MetaRadio?[More:]
I know arsehat was test-driving a web radio service in beta a few weeks ago (I've gone back to its address and it's still going in AutoPilot AutoDJ mode), but is there anybody besides me who's still interested or should I just stick to listening to the KCPR stream? (They should use the slogan "KCPR gets your heart started")
I'm still interested. I just had trouble last time around because my computer can't handle the buffering requirements.

Radio is dead due to lack of interest. Only six people kicked in money and only about six broadcast. About 60 people asked to broadcast but most never did mostly due to the fact they found setting up the software beyond their capabilities. I tried to make the software a portable app so it would need no setup but for some reason the DSP would not work when made portable.

I asked fellow bunnies if anyone had more portable app experience but none do. I talked to some people who said they had a no install app coming but they never did get it done. I also talked with a group about radio funded by advertising but that too is still not done.

I'd love to bring radio back because it seems to breed community but with no funding and software that most people find too hard to set up it seems dead for now.

I am still working to find alternatives. Any suggestions would be welcome.

augh, yeah, it's daunting the whole radio thing. I mean I dug it, a lot, y'all introduced me to song I never heard and learned to love, some were spinning familiar tunes in new sets I hadn't ever thought of, yeah that was good times.

There's basically shoutcast and nicecast... I haven't tried nicecast, should i give that a go and report back?

Nicecast is nice but you can't legally broadcast music with it without a lot more cost. And shoutcast is what is giving everyone headaches.

I liked doing radio here the few times i did it, using whatever winamp plugin was required at the time. But I never pulled more than 2 listeners at a time. So I got discouraged and stopped.

yeah the whole timezone thing was a bit sad, whenever I got six listeners it meant it was afternoon heading to night for me and people in L.A were wondering how I could go dancemusic crazy in the morning. ;)

It does take a while to build an audience but even with a couple of folks it can be worthwhile. I loved the time-zone aspect!

well, I'm kinda off-fun these days as my SO blew up my amp (lets not go there, I am fuming that he did and fuming even more that he hasn't replaced it yet, he was surprised the other week when I said "so when are you going to replace the amp you broke" he was surprised!? wtf!?)... So I can no longer toss albums on my Numarks and drag that into my computer which makes me pretty much mp3 DJ and I don't have as much on MP3 as I do on vinyl (yes I do everything backwards).

Vinyl what the cool kids do.

I used to love the radio and was often either the only one or one of two listening (though I seem to remember listening as a lurker too, so there may have been more listeners).

How much would we need to chip in?

I also both love and hate the time zones.
