Anyone else watching "Work of Art?"→[More:]I can't be the only one. Any love for Miles or Abdi?
Remember the episode of "30 Rock" where Krakowski says, "I have a secret weapon. My sexuality!" That's what I was reminded of in the "be shocking" episode when the blonde with the big fake boobs took pictures of herself naked.
I love Abdi, and I heard somewhere that Miles is just being like that as performance art in itself, but if so he's doing an awesome job of it. Seriously -- wtf with the concrete assholes?
I like Abdi and Miles, and also the clever photoshop guy though he seems limited. I hate(d) the guy who always put his own head into his art, who won the book cover challenge with the Time Machine cover that had an abstract blob the vague shape of his head as the time machine.
The judges annoy me a bit. I about threw my shoe at the screen when the one judge said she couldn't see the little picture of Miles (in Nao's portrait of him) from the angle she was standing at. Nao rightly pointed out that's just a stupid criticism, and the judges got on her for being defensive.
I am totally watching it... with my Post-Bac in Art degree. The problem I have with it is the same thing I had with getting my second degree: ArTiStS... you know the pretentious wank that everyone thinks they need to surround themselves with in order to "sell sell sell" themselves? My first degree was in international law, I should have just been happy with that. :)
I'm definitely on Team Abdi, Miles is a one-trick pony fully of bratty self-importance wankfest which the judges are totally buying into. It's always his flawed, half inked silkscreens of transistors and wood boxes. BFD. The guy naps half the show because all of his work is derived from the same elements, he doesn't need to think. I used to loathe these kind of post-pubescent assholes who basically think they know everything about life, art and the universe without ever having to had to get out and get a job like the rest of society. Oh wait, I still hate those asses, what was I thinking? To me, his constant stance at the top of the food chain just indicates the quality of the judges to be honest, folks who like to say and do, read too much into stuff, point and pomp.
I really have issue with this program in general and watch it like deer in headlights, or rubbernecking on the highway. Art is a process, not a product and this show effectively reduces the whole creation process down to just creating a product... and in horrifying manners. I'm a rather obsessive hyper-real/yankee- superflat painter myself who can take up to 10 years to complete a piece and if someone made me to work outside my medium, I would have a nervous breakdown. I'm a painter, not one who makes sculpture and anything I would be doing in another medium would just be play for me, and nothing I would consider art. Not to say there aren't really divinely talented folks out there who have mastered more than one medium, it's just that there really aren't that many, and certainly not on this show.
2 days to create a fully formed "masterpiece," often not in one's given medium... not art, product and therefore null.
