19 May 2010

I was having a peaceful morning just now, doing boring, repetitive work while listening to Copland's "Appalachian Spring" (such a beautiful piece of music), when suddenly[More:] "Appalachian Spring" ended and iTunes switched over to "Waterloo" (ABBA).

I'm not quite sure which emotion to feel.
What are the choices?

You need to talk to whoever entered that ABBA file into iTunes.

Awesome.

It was my mother. You talk to her. I'm done trying to influence her musical tastes.

At least it wasn't "Fernando".

Disclosure. . .I bought the SINGLE (45rpm) of "Knowing Me Knowing You" because it got stuck in my head and I HAD to.

The good thing about this is that it cured me.

There is a place in one's music library for ABBA (when I feel extra cheezy, it's better than Velveeta and less cringeworthy than The Captain & Tennille), but that is one reason I NEVER use any shuffle/randomize function for my listening, rather taking a few minutes a week to program playlists for myself (hey, I was a real radio DJ once - it's in my blood). Which reminds me WHATEVER HAPPENED TO METACHAT RADIO?!?!?

And when I get earwormed by "Knowing Me Knowing You", it always includes Alan Partridge doing the "Uh huhs".

I love Fernando. Unironically and unapologetically.

I love Fernando.

That's ok. I like the Captain & Tennille, except "Muskrat Love".

I gave up on ABBA hate after seeing Muriel's Wedding, in the theater, twice.

Do we share the same iTunes?

I was once enjoying an amorous afternoon with a newer partner when iTunes switched over from something reasonably appropriate (let's say Goldfrapp) to my Russian diction tutorials for choir.

I think that's when I started making better playlists.

This is why all my jazz is on a separate drive and all my opera is still on CD.

I think that's kinda cool, actually. Like a palate cleanse, although it's not my favorite ABBA song. Your mom might really dig a band called Music Go Music if she's down with the whole ABBA sound.

See, this is exactly the kind of thing that I put on my MP3 player ON PURPOSE just to mess with future IRFH. Several thousand kick-ass tunes with a couple dozen cheese grenades tossed in for excitement. Then, just to make sure that future me doesn't cop out, I add a few of them to every play list.

So I put the damned thing on shuffle and everything will be going along great, and then BLAM!!! Future IRFH gets hit square in the forehead with "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul.

And then I curse myself, and listen in wonderment, and live to do it all again.

Trust me. Future IRFH deserves it.
Yeah, future IRFH is such a dick! Sometimes I just want to grab that guy by the lapels, shake him, and scream "What happened to you, man? You used to be cool!"

Yeah, to be fair, that ship sailed a looong time ago.
