I just found what looks to be a small diamond wedged in the sole of one of my shoes. How the hell do I figure out if its real or not?[More:]It's really small - perhaps an 8th of a carat - and very, very sparkly. Any suggestions? (Other than...buy a lottery ticket?)
Try scratching it down a glass to see if it 'cuts' it.

Take it to a jeweler for an appraisal.

Take it to a reputable jeweler, not just a jewelry store. A clerk at the jewelry store may not have the correct training to determine if it's real or not, especially given how well they can manufacture CZs and such.

I forgot about the glass test. It passes, but CZ can cut glass too I think, so a jeweler it is.

Forget the diamond, take your diamond-making shoes to the jeweler and retire early.
