I don't know what I'd put in a card catalog cabinet (some friends of mine use theirs to hold their collection of Grateful Dead bootleg cassettes), but surely I'd think of something.
That would make a great spice storage bin. I currently have 36 bottles of herbs and spices in my pantry, and if I had the space, I could easily expand beyond it.
Plus, it's just plain gorgeous. From my province, too. I wonder if the old high school library I used to run is getting rid of theirs ... but they were a more modern style and not nearly as pretty.
I've wanted one of those for years. I don't have a practical need for one, but I spent so many years looking through those card catalogs that they have such a huge sentimental value to me. Maybe some day.
I *might* want to buy it (I will make a practical need for it). I'm sorry but I'm a craigslist n00b. How can I get the details including shipping to my province? help?
kch, Craigslist discourages long distance transactions. You could set up some Google Alerts for "card catalog", "library cabinet" and other search terms and also create notifications on Google Reader so that when a card catalog is advertised on Craigslist in a province near you you would find out about it.
thanks mlis. I do see the point of local transactions. I guess I think of my 'local' as a bit bigger, maybe because 'near me' is usually not too near by the time there is actually something available (I live a bit in the sticks).
I have a 60-drawer card catalog, with a separate stand and three pull-out shelves for resting drawers on, that I got for the cost of hauling it home from the university I was working at (i.e., free). It had been refinished six months before it was retired from active duty. It came to me with only half of the rods, so I don't use them.
I store all sorts of things in it: Table linens, napkin rings, stationery, notepads, envelopes and stamps, miscellaneous office supplies (tape, scissors, etc.), takeout menus, and other random stuff. I think I could even store wine bottles in it. I have one drawer that contains library memorabilia: old stamps (e.g., CIRCULATING COPY), date due slips, old catalog cards.
At holiday time, I take the labels out of the holders on the fronts of each drawer and replace them with alternating red and green tissue paper. Sometimes I hang mini-bows or mini glass balls on the pulls.
love love love init's card catalog and am always on the look out for one like it. I have two, one in use here at my old place and here at my new place.
Just have to keep looking maudlin, there are bargains out there. I almost bought one like init's this past Summer but it had extensive water damage on the top and would have required a new one.
