01 January 2010

This is a hangover thread. Please whisper. [More:]

Actually I'm not that bad off, just a headache and a little bit of an acid stomach. I was rrrrrelatively moderate last night.

I'm craving a big spicy burrito but there ain't no burritos in England, folks. So I'm making pinto bean soup with lots of cumin and garlic, tortillas from scratch (gotta love a good tortilla press), and some sort of salsa fresca with tomaters and cilantro. I'll get some melted cheese and hot sauce in there somewhere too.

Now, kick in, aspirin!

What are you guys doin'?
There are too burritos in England, specklet. I found a taqueria a few months ago in Goodge Street. As good as anything I ate in California, albeit somewhat smaller. And a decent price, too, just a fiver.

Specklet, I'll have you know that the best burrito I've ever had was in Islington. Granted, it's a long way to go. Damn, that was a good burrito, though.

I'm just trying to wake up, stretch out a stiff back, and get up the gumption to take down a christmas tree, and tidy up some. Seems like a good day for doing some organization. This morning, I realized that my new little spice jars will stick to my refrigerator, using some sort of magic, I think. So, I loaded them up and they are now nicely beside my stove, ready to add FLAVOURS to things!

Okay, I take it back about the burritos. But there are no burritos in Tunbridge Wells, that's for damn sure.

Can I please have a spice rack the size of Texas? I have an entire cupboard full of spices that I am continually rummaging through.

The Whelk's Hangover cure (Circa freshman year):

Bacon. Fried Bread (in Bacon fat). One egg (with Tabasco) Glass of Cranberry juice. Cup of coffee. 5 cups of ice water. Vitamin. 3 bong hits, one watery beer.

Today is the day I give thanks for being a boring old married man who never has to go anywhere on New Year's Eve ever again.

The only other hangover remedy that ever worked for me was also preventive in nature: while boozing, drink as much water as possible. I'm not sure what the theory is. Either it helps you flush out the alcohol before it fucks you up too much, or it ameliorates the dehydration that contributes to one's suffering.

On noticing Whelk's comment, I can endorse both bacon and cannabis - as they both make life more pleasant, whatever the circumstances.

We woke up and made a messy-ass greasy egg-cheese-sausage-pepper scramble, washed down with liberal amounts of orange juice before we realized that neither of us was hungover. Oh well. I am gonna eat like I am hungover, anyway. I sure drank my fair share of champagne last night. I didn't overdo it TOO much, though, and never stopped drinking water, so I think that helped. I did get my son to come over and pick my husband and I up from the party we were at. I love having my kid be my DD. Awesome.
Today is going to be lazy and hangover-ish. I hope all of your headaches and queasiness are easily cured! Sorry about the burrito dilemma, Specklet.

I am hanging in there. I had one rum drink, three beers, and a jello shot last night. I do have a headache but no tummy troubles, thank goodness. I am about to ingest some coffee and Tylenol. Eggs and bacon (and burritos) sound good too.

Specklet, I have a small lazy Susan and a stairstep shelf in a cabinet I use for spices. It works pretty well to visualize everything.

In honor of the Hangoverday I am going to make a Full English right here in America. I even have a can of proper baked beans.

I had a Dutch baby and bacon for breakfast, and just ate a small cheese and cucumber sandwich. I would dearly love a toke on a joint, but sadly there is no pot in Tunbridge Wells, either. (Or rather, I don't know anyone well enough to ask if they have any.) I wouldn't mind a beer, either, but everywhere is closed. Stupid Tunbridge Wells.

It'll be a while before the soup is ready. Dern. Why do I crave spicy things when hung over? I understand the cheese/grease thing and why that is, but why spicy?

Lori, a stair shelf dealie and a lazy susan would help, but when I say I've got a cupboard full of spices, I mean it literally. So. many. spices. Maybe two lazy susans...

My head hurts. Aspirin, where are you?!

When the slumber party breaks up, I'm going to a Cochon de Lait with a big pot of grits and grillades . I've never felt more in touch with my Cajun heritage.

if ever there was a day for making the entire package of bacon it is today.

ACTUALLY, the best hangover cures can be found in texas and environs.

Breakfast Tacos. Hand-sized deep fried egg and beans and bovine salvia glands covered in hot sauce.

Protein Grease Bomb.

Damn you Coldchef now I want cheese grits.

No hangover here - I danced all my imbibing off prior to sleep. Had a great night DJ-ing, I spun a bunch of electronica and world music and a woman asked if I'd DJ her next house party.

I have to remove the phrase, "No, I don't have a card." from my vocabulary as soon as possible in 2010.

Hangover cures, hmm. Coffee, water, vomiting as appropriate to your situation. OJ definitely.

Why do I crave spicy things when hung over?
Because spicy foods release endorphins. I, too, love me some spiciness to cut through the fog of a hangover.

Like LT I do not have a drinking hangover, as my two pints quickly evaporated during the street dance party, but I do have a middle-aged out-of-shape body hangover resulting from excess of boogie.

That did not stop me from making a good weekend breakfast. I had some local pork sausage and figured I'd make pancakes to go with. I picked a pancake recipe out of an old 1940sish cookbook titled "French Pancakes." Only when I was halfway through mixing them did I realize that it was a recipe for crepes. No worries, I just grabbed a jar of raspberry jam and plopped it in and rolled 'em up. They were deLICious!

I made:

An entire packet of bacon
fried bread
fired egg
baked beans in tomato sauce
fried mushrooms
served over random salad greens
Mimosas.

and finished with a banana. All food groups, represent!

That makes sense, jrossi. I just ate a piece of cheese with some hot sauce on it. Mmmmm, endorphiny.

I felt a little under this morning but coffee, cold pizza and a shower seems to have cured it. Had a fun time last night hanging out with the neighbors and drinking way too much Christmas Ale from Cleveland.

Not too hungover but I was prepared to be: I baked a potato (the biggest one I've ever seen) last night and this morning fried it up in garlic, onion, red bell pepper topped with extra-sharp cheddar. Served with habanero catsup, toast and lots of coffee. Probably shoulda drunk more!

Only mildly hungover here. Sleeping in till after noon helped with that. I think lunch may involve a trip to El Pollo Loco.

Only one glass of (still) wine last night. 5 hard games of volleyball this morning starting at 8 then a breakfast of bangers (hi jan) and eggs.

I have some Trader Joes Processo, and some Bollinger Champagne. . .one will get opened, depending on how the Ducks do today. . .*smile*

Ahhh, am now stuffed with soup, quesadillas, salsa fresca and hot sauce. My mouth is burning and it feels gooooood.

Still have a bit of a headache but I don't care. The original The Italian Job is on telly.

Not hungover at all. I fell asleep long before midnight, sadly long before I had a chance to drink much. Actually, a nice way to spend NYE.
posted by theora55 01 January | 15:46
I intended to pop a bottle of champagne last night, since we've had one languishing in the fridge for months. I completely forgot it, though, so I also am not hungover.

I am a mite tipsy, though; just returned from a New Year's brunch thrown by friends a few blocks away. They always throw lovely, relaxed parties and serve amazing food. They kept plying us with mimosas, not noticing that The Fella kept handing his off to me. And I drank them.

The party wound down and a couple of us stuck around to chat quietly as the light faded from the room. Very cozy. When I left (The Fella left early for work), they sent me toddling off home with a doughnut in my pocket. Hurray!

My dinner party last night went well - and we all made it to the square for the midnight countdown!

Here's what you all missed on Sylwester last night (what Poles call New Year's Eve) - the nightclub scene here is, uh, developing, but the square is awesome. (Not my video.) People do their own fireworks...there's not what you'd call much of a health-and-safety mentality here.

And PS: What's the weird Enya-ish song played at midnight?

Specklet, I mildly, and quietly, curse you....I'm CRAVING those Islington burritos now. And, it's a long way to go. AND there's not a decent burrito for 300 miles. So, as kindly as possible, I CURSE YOU! You know, with whuffles and nice stuff.

No hangover here - only a glass of champagne and one glass of wine all night, but a bitching stomach upset from an excess of rich food. I was actually in bed all day, and haven't eaten anything yet. Damn, I'm prepared for alcohol to be mean to me, but now food? This is the only way in which getting older sucks.

Well, I may get my hangover after all. I had this gift certificate for a really nice, old-school 'fancy restuarant' type place lying around for a while. After I read this article in the Times about how people don't prioritize having fun, which is why these gift certificates don't get redeemed half the time, I decided dammit, we're using it. So I made reservations and took LT out to a very fine meal. It was an old farm from the 1700s that got redeveloped into a restaurant in the 20th century; I think they decorated the place around 1946 and haven't touched it since. It's the kind of place you take your grandma on Easter. It was VERY good though, and we splurged and had soup to nuts - amazing bread rolls, spinach strudel and soup to start, then filet w/roasted garlic and blue cheese and mushrooms and roast chicken with lemon-sage sauce, respectively, with potatoes rosti and green beans that I swear were poached in butter, and apple pie/chocolate mousse to finish. catching up with the house wine now. MM! This was all washed down with a generous rum punch and a bottle of great red zinfandel - I drank my share but had to slow down a bit since it was my job to drive home in falling snow, so I'm We were also the youngest people in the place who were not there with parents, which is saying something since we are not especially young.

What a treat. I've been hanging on to that gift certificate for months - got it in thanks for a Slow Food event I helped with there, and was waiting until we had "something to celebrate" before using it. Well, screw it. We're alive, it's New Year's, and that's enough reason to celebrate.

Ooooh, Miko, I would bet dollars to doughnuts that I know exactly the restaurant you're talking about. If I'm right, this

It's the kind of place you take your grandma on Easter

is spot-on; indeed, it was among my grandparents' favorite restaurants, and they would take us there often during our summer visits from Texas. I have many happy, if stuffy, memories of that one-time farmhouse.

I was just thinking about the place a couple of days ago, in fact; my sister and I were talking about Grampy, and how anytime one of the kids looked a bit piqued, he would urge us to order the prime rib. "Get some iron in your system!"

posted by Elsa 01 January | 23:16
Ha! Elsa, you MUST have it. The prime rib was on the menu tonight. The table next to us ordered it, and I witnessed it in all its insanely rare pink plate-blanketing glory. How funny! "Happy, if stuffy" is a great description of the place. I used to sniff at those places as insufficiently hip, but since that grandparent generation is passing on and they are fewer and farther between, I have come to really enjoy them with a respectful nostalgia. Plus, the food is GOOD!

Uggggghhhhh, wasn't even able to get out of bed long enoughh to make breakfast. Just snacked on some random crap (e.g., salted nuts from Walgreens), drank a bunch of water, and went back to bed. Thankfully, those also in my household did more or less the same, so sleep cured all.
posted by treepour 01 January | 23:32
I knew it! I just took a nostalgic look at the menu online, and it was even more nostalgic than I expected: they serve a few of the same (now dated, but still delicious) dishes that they served me when I was seven. The orange and walnut salad, for example --- I wouldn't have remembered that, but when I saw it on the menu, it provoked a strong sense memory.
posted by Elsa 01 January | 23:35
Ayup = that's the place! I meant to get that salad but got derailed by the "Rustic New England Menu" which changes nightly and which I could not resist - but did not include that salad. I love that some of these items have been on the menu THAT long. Few things in this life are so reliable.

The place is neat, though. They have lately been into the "green" thing, which is how they crossed my radar. They did a "Green Wedding" giveaway last fall that was won by someone I know from the farmer's market. I think the person who spearheaded that is dragging them kicking and screaming into the 21st century, just a little bit.
posted by Miko 01 January | 23:47
I stumbled across that green-wedding giveaway while researching area venues, and entered the contest. I didn't really want a fancy wedding, but if we won one from a favorite childhood restaurant? That would have been too fate-driven to ignore.

I like an old-fashioned menu once in a while. I'm currently lamenting the dearth of old-tastes menus in my city; I have a hankerin' for some snails and frogs' legs, and you can't really get those on the contemporary-cuisine menus.
posted by Elsa 02 January | 00:10
I'm very late to the thread, but I will just say that this year, the supermarket only had tomato juice which was months out of date. Accordingly, the traditional new year's day breakfast (/hangover cure) of large bloody marys was not available.

Serious bummer.

Ah yesterday's hangover. Probably not as bad as I deserved. I took the day off from computers, made a giant pot of hoppin' john and a big mess of collards and ate them all day with biscuits because I was too lazy to go to the store and get cornmeal. Then I spent the rest of the day curled up reading and eating; it was awesome. Since it's snowing again (sweet weeping bebby jeebus, when did I move to the Yukon?) and not supposed to get over 15 degrees, I'm doing the same thing today but without the headache.
