Trucking question. Something I ordered was shipped by FedEx ground and took about 36 hours to get from Keasbey, NJ, to Salt Lake City Utah. Google Maps says the drive takes about 34 hours, so that doesn't leave a lot of time for breaks. Did they switch off drivers midway through at some station? Someone else sleeping in the cab? How does this work?

This is probably a dumb question but... Is there such a thing as a USB cable that would go from my computer to my TV and turn the TV into a computer monitor? So that, for instance, I could watch hulu on my TV?

The theme for this week's Photo Friday is Reflections. Search through your photo albums, find the pictures you feel best reflect this theme (hahaha, I'm SO witty) and we'll see them on Friday.

For new members - don't post your pictures in this thread. This is just a 'heads up' to give people time to find their photos. There'll be a new Photo Friday thread on, erm, Friday where everyone can post their pictures.

MetaRadio WEATHER or Not While it's raining kitties and puppies around me, I've been going through my music collection pulling everything weather-related. DANG there are a lot of songs with "rain" in the title. Starting in a few minutes, I'll have 45 minutes of different versions of one classic blues 'Weather' song (culled from another collector's 80+ versions), then on the top of the hour (8PM Pacific, 11PM Eastern, 4AM GMT, etc etc) I'll go crazy with Rain, Sunshine, Snow, Wind and other Weather, in a set that will run a long time (and probably still need to be cut off and continued later). Tune in any time for the next mumblemumble and bring your own umbrella!

Good Johnny Carson videos? During the current U.S. late-night talk show fracas, people (usually not in the Leno camp) often reverentially refer to Johnny Carson, and intimate that he was the greatest late-night talk show host ever. I wasn't usually allowed to stay up that late when Johnny Carson was on the air, so I missed it. Can anyone point me to some specific videos that illustrate why Carson was so fantastic?

Chanterelles! Not to brag, but I just dug some out of the dirt this afternoon and had 'em for dinner tonight. Turns out life is not dismal and hopeless after all.
NYC people and/or readers of the New Yorker, can I please pick your brains? There was an article in the New Yorker (I think) awhile back about a guy who owns a restaurant in NYC. Not unusual in itself, but he is crabby & direct & tells people if they don't like the food, get out! (The food is supposed to be great, BTW). Anyone know who the guy is or the restaurant name?

Oh, not the Soup Nazi. This was a sit down entree kinda place.

Quick soup hope me?! Eep! I'm making a creamy chicken broth, mushroom and wild rice soup. The recipe calls for white wine, but I don't have any, and don't feel like going out to get any.

Use beer instead of wine, or just forget the alcohol? (I also don't have brandy, or anything like that.)
The things from dreams are free: So I had a nap and a dream ...a dream with what I think is a good idea in it.

Is there a way to get habenero ouchy juice off one's fingers? Washing thoroughly with hand soap does not seem to be doing it. Should I stick my hand in a lemon or something?

Your first sidebar art for 2010 is sort of happysad, sombre and bright, reflecting forward and back, inward and outward with, top to bottom on the left: a stark, contemplative window scene from Slack-a-gogo, a beautiful splash of winter color from specklet, a photo of her cat Spunky on the morning of his last day by typewriter, and a bit of whimsical embroidery by jonathanstrange. On the right, a photo of Kaylee as the spirit of winter elegance by deborah.

The Slang Of Body Language I am reminded on this remembering eve that a a friend said I was the only person she knew who could actually could "raise hackles", a quirk of movement where I become bigger and stiffer and colder looking when threatened. I never knew I could do this, nor was I aware I was doing it. What are your odd body language quirks?

Year O' Books. According to my LibraryThing list, I read 92 books this year. But there's a good chance I left a couplethree off, so let's say I read at least 92 books this year, and probably not more than 95. My first book of 2009 was The Gargoyle (started on Jan. 01), and the last was The Crimson Petal and the White (finished on Dec. 31, yesterday). Tidy! Read more...
