I just saw Pretty in Pink for the first time [More:]Blane is weak, but Duckie is better as a best friend---I sensed insecurity under the hyperkineticness. And Iona, Pet Store Guy asked out the punk, not Nancy Reagan! I wanted the dad to be fleshed out a bit more too. How were they supporting themselves on SS and a part time job?
How funny, I saw St. Elmo's Fire on television last night! I LOVE Pretty In Pink, even more than Sixteen Candles or The Breakfast Club (well, maybe not the Breakfast Club), but I do think Pretty In Pink is Molly Ringwald's best film. Plus, it has the Psychedelic Furs in the soundtrack, and I loves me some Psych Furs. Blane is weak, James Spader is a completely believable douchebag.

If you e-mail John Hughes right now maybe he could call everyone in for a reshoot?

I watched "Pretty in Pink" recently and it occurred to me that Duckie was her gay boyfriend, whether or not he knows it himself. Plus, he smashes the fourth wall at the end, which is fantastic.

I've still never seen it, I probably should so that I get all of the references. I was in college in the '80s and didn't have a TV and never went to movies so there's a five year hole in my pop-cultural knowledge there.

They squeaked by on that income. She's always making her own clothes and jewellery and stuff.

Love Pretty in Pink (but Breakfast Club is my favourite). Duckie and Iona are the friends we should all have had while we were growing up.

Black humor, eatdonuts. It's what's for dinner!

Hmmm ColdChef, I don't think Duckie's gay... I remember lots of straight guys my age dressing like dandies then. Sort of weird seeing Molly being the one who was picked on; I went to school with her in 6th and 7th grade (when she was on Facts of Life) and she was a soc. When I asked her what homeroom she'd be in she was snotty, but later that year she said Hi more nicely.

It wasn't just the shoes and bolo ties, but maybe I'm projecting too much. Interesting note: much of his dialog was improvised.

Ok, if Duckie is her gay boyfriend I must now reasses the massive crush I had on him when I saw the film way back in the eighties.

Crush was cemented hard at the fourth-wall crashing. Duckie, you rule.
