Ask MeCha: Music at work. Help me find something online to listen to. [More:]My office has paper-thin walls, and I'm sandwiched between our therapist and our psychiatrist's offices. I don't want to hear crying anymore. Also, the area outside my door seems to be the water cooler. The gossip and vapid conversations about shopping is getting to me. I bought myself some headphones and am planning to listen to iTunes radio stations or some other things online. I have no idea how that works.

I also have no idea what kind of music I like. I know I *don't* like gaelic music that incorporates messages about native americans, though. Rainsticks are out, too. Screechy is bad. Talk is probably distracting. Rap is out.

SO! Where do you go online to listen to streaming stuff? I've just been using 70s and 80s radio stations, but between the commercials and crap songs (not all are crap!), I'm really needing some ideas.

I always liked KEXP, except during their membership drives. Which appear to be happening now.

But maybe something to keep in mind for the future.

FilterMusic is a good listing of online radio stations/music streaming sources, grouped by genre. It's one of the few places like this I've found that includes classical music, so I keep it bookmarked.

Pandora! It's customizable, so you get what you want. (Except that they keep playing Coldplay at me, no matter how many times I give them the thumbs-down.)

I'll even send you a link to my station.

also, The Hound. His archived shows contain some of wildest wooliest music you'll ever hear.

I like Boot Liquor - Americana, alt-country, Southern rock, blues, old-fashioned country music from the 30s, 40s and 50s, some really funny stuff, songs that make you tear up inside, songs that make you sing along ...

I look up filmclips on youtube. But then again I don't get the chance to have music on too often.
