You can't find it, because you don't have it.
posted by Ardiril 02 February | 19:36
Yeah, Eideteker, you'd think. But can't FIND it.

I am going to assume it happened in December when New Job and Christmas Season collided in a smoking heap.

I've never balanced my checkbook, either.
I am checking my statements for fraudulent charges now, but rarely did that in the past.

THEY HAVE CAPTURED THE 23-FOOT PYTHON THAT GOT LOOSE IN TOWN AND THEREFORE WE CAN ONCE AGAIN ALLOW OUR PETS AND SMALL CHILDREN OUTDOORS.

WTF? I LIVE IN CALIFORNIA, AND YET A YEAR AGO I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT TIGERS ROAMING THE STREETS AND NOW IT'S PYTHONS? I DID NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS.

I THINK THE BOY I LIKE HAS BROKEN UP WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND BUT I AM TOO MUCH OF A COWARD TO ASK HIM IF THAT'S WHY HE'S ALL OF A SUDDEN KEEN TO HANG OUT WITH ME OUTSIDE OF OUR WEEKLY D&D GAME.

ALSO I HAVE RUN OUT OF EI AND STILL DON'T HAVE A JOB THAT MAKES MORE THAN $80 A WEEK. THANK GOD FOR MY CRAZY PILLS OR I WOULD BE A GIANT PUDDLE OF ANXIETY RIGHT NOW.

I used to balance the checkbook religiously but since we only write one or two checks a month now, it all sort of balances itself.

There is something so quaint about people in America writing cheques. Let the machines handle all that money stuff, then you can just observe your account on the Internet. No pen! The age of computers!
posted by Meatbomb 02 February | 21:23
I'm with meatbomb. Even though I still write a few checks every month, I haven't tried to balance my checkbook in at least 10 years... I just look at my accounts regularly online.

I've never balanced my checkbook. I've had the same checking account since 1979, too. And sadly, the same check design except for this one time when I tried a different design and was so unnerved by the change that I reordered the same number sequence in the original design.

yeah, me too. How long has online banking been common in the US? I know that for some things, New Zealand is weirdly ahead. I've been doing online banking since the late 90s, but mr. gaspode didn't really start until 2004 or so. Is he a late adopter?

I HATE THIS TIME OF YEAR WINTER HAS BEEN AROUND LONG ENOUGH. I COULD DEAL WITH MOST OF IT EXCEPT FOR THE !@#$ING DRYNESS, THE FACT THAT MY FINGERNAILS ARE FRIGGING SHREDDING, THEY'RE CHIPPING WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO CHIP, AND MY CUTICLES ARE CRACKING AND BLEEDING DESPITE THE FACT THAT I STOPPED PICKING AT THEM LAST FALL AFTER THE CUTE GUY AT WORK MADE COMMENTS ON THEM. I SLATHER LOTION ON MY BACK EVERY MORNING AND CAN ALMOST HEAR MY SKIN GOING SLURP SLURP AH, THANK YOU!! AND MY CALVES ARE ITCHY AND THE LITTLE WAL-GREEN HUMIDIFIER DIDN'T DO SQUAT IN MY APARTMENT AND I GET A SHOCK WHENEVER I TOUCH A DOORKNOB OR LIGHTSWITCH, I'M GOING TO MOVE TO ALABAMA SOME DAY NOT JUST FOR THE WARMTH BUT FOR THE HUMIDITY AS WELL!! AAGH!

I write checks so rarely that I often spend more than a few minutes looking for my checkbook. With debit cards and a mobile browser, I can often check my account when I get in the car and the transaction has already hit. My need to balance is non-existent. The convenience factor is extraordinary.

I tried relying on the "look at your account balance online" thing, but it wasn't enough- I would always forget about some ATM withdrawal or some check I had written that hadn't cleared yet and bounce something. When I switched banks after college, it was the perfect time to start fresh and keep the book balanced. I do write a few checks a month and they generally don't clear very fast (often because I forget to give or send them and they sit in my wallet), so being balanced on paper is key.

MELISMATA DO YOU HAVE HEALTH CARE? I WENT TO THE DERMATOLOGIST TODAY BECAUSE OMG WINTER ITCH SHIT, AND SHE WAS ALL ABOUT THE OINTMENT. ONITMENT GOOD. GOOOOOOOD.

Yeah, I do my books in my head or on a scatch sheet of paper, and it's half online and half off line. I've only bounced once, and that was when I was in charge of throwing the company picinc. Which was A - Hell, and B - I effing bounced. Even though I was renumerated (just for receipts, not bank fees). It effing sucked.

SPEAKING OF CHECKS!!!! EVERY RETAIL OUTLET WITH MORE THAN ONE REGISTER SHOULD HAVE A CHECKS-ONLY LANE. GTH OUT OF THE WAY YOU PAPER-CHECK-WRITING LUDDITES!!!!! WHAT DO THINK THIS IS? 1985?????

THE NEW ATMS WITH THE CHECK SCANNING DON'T ALWAYS DO IT CLEARLY SO YOU STILL HAVE TO WRITE DOWN THE AMOUNT OF EACH ONE.

THE CONSTRUCTION PEOPLE DIDN'T REMOVE THEIR TRASH TODAY, I NEED TO ORDER MORE KNOBS AND I DON'T REMEMBER WHICH COMPANY I BOUGHT THEM FROM IN THE FIRST PLACE.

I'VE HAD THREE DAYS IN A ROW THAT I'VE GOTTEN UP TO PEE IN THE MIDDLE OF A WORKOUT, LEFT MY READING MATERIAL, WATER, TOWEL ON (AND SOMETIMES BOOTS NEAR)THE BIKE, THEN COME BACK TO FIND SOMEONE USING IT. JUST WHAT PART OF LEAVING MY STUFF THERE MEANS I'M COMING BACK DON'T YOU PINHEADS FUCKING UNDERSTAND?

I STILL DON'T KNOW WHEN THE ELEVATORS WILL BE SHUT DOWN.

I've had a chequing account since I was 16 (I turn 34 in two weeks) and never once have used them in a store. I've only ever used them for rent, one per month. I don't even receive account statements, I just use the online and have since 1998. (My bank even had its own little non-browser client back then! So adorable!)

I'm with Meatbomb -- kinda surprised to find the US a bit behind on the whole banking thing. (For example, debit purchases are instant here, so it's not like you can use your card and later find out you've overdrawn -- you'll just get declined.)

Anyway. *clears throat*

I SLICED THE SHIT OUT OF MY THUMB THIS EVENING WHILE CHANGING THE HEAD OF MY SNARE DRUM. IT IS STILL THROBBING.

I HAD AWKWARD, UNCOMFORTABLE SMALL TALK WITH A GIRL I KNOW WHEN I RAN INTO HER ON THE STREET TODAY, AND I AM ANNOYED THAT I AM SUCH A WEIRDO FREAK WHO CAN NOT BE NORMAL AND SPEAK TO HUMANS LIKE A REAL PERSON.

MELISMATA, I CAN HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING A CAT - SAME EFFECT WITH DOORKNOBS AND LIGHTSWITCHES, BUT YOU ALSO GET TO LAUGH WHEN EXCESSIVE STROKING GIVES THE CAT A SHOCK.

I think I've had online banking since about 1999, and I'm pretty sure my bank has had ATMs that scan cheques since about 2000. They work quite well.

A lot of retailers here now won't accept cheques, just in the last couple of years. Pretty much everyone has a debit/cash card.

Uh, that's what I do. Which is why I only now noticed I cannot find FORTY DOLLARS I THOUGHT I HAD.

DANG CANANDIAN BANK...
