12 December 2008

Contained within this thread is an announcement. [More:]

*clears throat nervously*

I'm going to propose. Wherein "propose" means saying "Dearest, would you like to download some forms from the Secretary of State's website and fill them out in ballpoint pen so that, pursuant to California Family Code Section 297, we can have many of the same rights and obligations as traditionally married couples (though we're not allowed to call it whatever they call it). And then once we have our forms notarized and mailed and we've written a check for $33, we can thus forward build a life together?"

It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but hell, I'm not really the sentimental sort anyway, so it'll have to do.
SQUEEEEEE!

I wish you the very best pup!

CONGRATULATIONS!

And stake claim to whatever word you want, honey. The bigots and idiots do NOT get a say in who any of us love, nor the language we get to use.

Big, big, big hugs and kisses to you both.

(And when the time comes, I will congratulate you on your marriage. Just because the government doesn't recognize it, doesn't mean I can't.)

Thanks, y'all!

Yeah, I guess I *am* nervous. It's nervous excitement, though. The subject has been addressed in passing, extremely casually, but I think I know enough from that that it'll be a Yes.

It's really just very disorienting. I never thought I'd be here, and I'm realizing now that part of that is that I never *wanted* to be here. So coming to the realization that hey, yes, this is actually what I want, has my head all kinds of spinning.

It's also strange in the sense that, in its fundamental sense, there's no 'event' to look forward to. Not like with a wedding, anyway. The event is putting a piece of paper in the mail. We could schedule something more public, yes, but basically all that's happening to change anything is that a form is being filled out. And when you look at it that way, it looks really empty.

Another thing that rubs me the wrong way a little -- CA domestic partnerships are only available to same-sex couples and couples in which one of the folks is over 62. Sorry, straight folks of a certain age, you're SOL. But then there's this fee structure: It costs $10 to register. Unless you're gay. Then you've got to pay a $23 'tax' that goes into a fund to educate people about GLBT issues. See, I think it's the straight people getting church-married who should have to pay for that educational program, not us gay people who already know the rules and bylaws. Something about it just ain't right.

But again, thanks!

Special-k, are you around this evening after 5:30?
posted by mudpuppie 12 December | 17:53
OMG, congratulations! And there had better be a pic of the happily en-formed couple!

Or at least, good luck, and then most likely congratulations.

Hey, I've always wondered, if you come up here to Canada, will the 'civil union' be considered a 'marriage' here?
And if you got married up here how would they recognize it in California?
I guess that's a question for my own government but I'm curious as to how marriages port to areas that don't recognize them.
