Hamdan sentencing - omg it's sort of rational! Rejecting a prosecution request for a severe sentence, a panel of military officers sentenced the convicted former driver for Osama bin Laden to five and a half years in prison on Thursday. ... The unexpectedly short sentence came after Mr. Hamdan was acquitted Wednesday of the most serious charge against him, conspiracy, having been convicted only of material support for terrorism.
Somehow this feels like the tiniest flash of a less-appalling future, that we in the US may yet survive these years, and rejoin some semblance of civilization.
I was pleased by the ruling as well - with such a stacked deck against the guy, I was truly fearing the worst. I'll tell you one thing: if this guy was supposed to be a slam-dunk for the Administration and a big electoral coup come November, I don't see that happening once people realize that the "terrorists" at Guantanamo were either sold for cash payments by local warlords or were totally uninvolved in any kind of terrorist activity.

I heard one of the prosecutors had said something along the lines of "when you find out your boss is killing people, you quit", which just astounded me. This guy is from *Yemen*, not exactly a paragon of democracy, order, and the rule of law; it's not like the guy could have taken Osama bin Laden to court and sued for unlawful termination or discrimination or something after finding out that his boss was behind 9/11 or something. The Bin Ladens are a huge force in the construction industry all over that part of the world; I imagine that being a driver for one was a relatively stable job for a dad; Wikipedia says he earned $200 a month for his work.

Overall, I'm happy to see that the process is, hopefully, in its last throes. We'll probably never close Guantanamo, which really angers me, but at least we know that it's not the total black hole we feared it would become.

Aren't they also "crediting" time served, therefore making for less than a year more in prison?

The only reservation I have, and it's not the defendant's problem, is that when he is released, as he apparently richly deserves to be, based on the evidence, he's going to be very radicalized and bitter, and somewhat of a hero among radical muslims.

Yes, something is wonky in FF. Like a bunch of posts got eaten by a black hole. I know my photo friday post was bad, but that doesn't mean half of todays posts have to disappear.

Thanks, DarkForest,

I just posted something very boring (It seems to be a heading to Claudia's post on the front page). I won't mind if my post disappears, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy.

I checked on FF and Safari.
