23 June 2008

This is the week I find out if I've been laid off after 15+ years. I don't know when I get the call with the good or bad news, but it's coming some time before Friday. [More:] I don't know how deep the cuts will be here, but a third of our work force is being cut internationally, so I'm not expecting the best.

My company did a "pre downsizing downsize" just over a year ago, which means that most of us left are really good at what we do. A lot of very strong employees are going to lose their jobs for no fault of their own. At this stage all I can do is hope for the best or least for a good severance package.

Either way, I'm ready. I like my job and I'd like to stay, but I'm really over due for a change (and a pay raise), so this could be the push I've been waiting for. Complacency, comfort, and fear of the unknown are hard things to shake when you know you really should move on.

And yet at the moment the thing that bums me out the most this morning is loaing George Carlin.
good luck sweetheart! hugs.

Good luck either way. Getting laid off was the best thing that happened to me three years ago. I got out of a job that I hated, they gave me some fabulous parting gifts, I got some time off, and I found a much better job for more money. You sound like you have a good attitude going in.

Good luck either way, Slack... it's not a pleasant feeling, waiting for that other shoe to drop. (Or not.) I know you'll be glad to get it resolved on way or the other so you can move on.

Dude - you will be better off if it falls that way. You will land on your feet like a panther (riaow!) and then go on to form a global multi-media empire that will then sell me my next Big Thing.

Echoing octothorpe, I got laid off after 7 years and it ended up being one of the best things that happened to me (although I was upset at the time).

Here's hoping no matter what happens, you end up happier and with a much bigger paycheck.

Lots of good, guitar-drenched thoughts heading your way from L.A.! Whichever way the decision goes, it sounds like you're primed to handle it.

What kind of work do you do? Maybe we can network you into your next job.

He's a slacker go-go dancer. It's pretty specialized work. I've seen him do it!

scody: the slacker go-go dancer union has really gotten better since you left the scene. Tassels are now optional and we're allowed to drink something other than Pabst Blue Ribbon. But we still have to wear the cowboy hats and dance to MC Hammer, so it's not paradise, but it's a job.

I WISH that's what I did, but I just don't have the hips for go-go dancing. I do sales and marketing in an industry that's imploding on itself, so when my time comes I'll be moving on to another industry. I've had a hundred people tell me "sales? You'll have no problem finding a better job!". They better be right other wise I'm going to start crashing on their couches.

Aw, that's too bad that the Greek Fisherman's Cap Initiative of '03 didn't go anywhere. Good news about the tassels, though -- less chafing!
