Orange Swan Story #58.5: Quick on the Draw Some years back a cop I knew told me this story...

[More:]"Mike" and his partner and a third cop got called to a house because of a "domestic dispute" - read, an asshole beating up his wife.

When the three cops got to the house, the man ran out the back door and through his back yard, simultaneously letting his three pit bulls out into the fenced back yard as well.

Mike and the other two cops along the side of the house to the back yard, with the third cop in the middle and Mike and his partner running on either side of him.

The pit bulls were completely freaking out, and one of them jumped the fence and came running towards the three cops.

Mike and his partner drew their guns, but the third cop shouted at the dog, "FREEZE! POLICE!"

In the instant before Mike and his partner shot the dog, they looked at the third cop and snickered. The dog, incidentally, had not stopped nor put his paws in the air.

When Mike told me this story, I said, "And no one will ever let him forget it, will they?"

Mike said, "No way. Someone will bring it up at his retirement dinner."
Awww, they shot the dog? :-(

TPS, this is why they shot the dog. (Warning : dog attack footage)

TPS, I highly doubt the multiple nasty, de-socialised and attack-trained dogs at the residence of a wife-beating asshole are likely to be anyone's idea of a cuddly family pet. I grew up around the sorts of trashy wife-beater types who prided themselves in how many of the neighbour's cats their dogs had killed/eaten, how 'tough' they were, and how much 'fight' they had. They're not pets, they're fanged, four-legged penis augmentation.

I'm given to understand that cops shoot perpetrator's dogs on a semi-regular basis in crime scene scenarios. It's a sometimes unavoidable fact of dealing with these situations.

Wow, jan... that video was just surreal. The disconnect between the owner's concern for her pet (which she just ordered to attack a human) versus the total disregard for the welfare of that human. That's just..... deranged.

It kind of seems like she thinks she's going to get away with it becuase it wasn't her that physically attacked the animal control officer.

Of course the cops shot the dog — it would have maimed or killed at least one of them.

I had a dog sicced on me once. Total out of the blue situation, I was 10ish and riding my bike a block west of my house when this teenaged girl and her baby brother told their German Shepherd to get me. I still don't know why. He got one good teeth pattern into my thigh before I was able to kick him off and skedaddle.

They claimed they had no idea why the dog attacked me, blamed it on the noise from my spokes. I'll never forget her hissing "sic'em", though.

Based on my lifetime of pet ownership, including three family dogs, I don't think a dog just goes crazy like that all on its own.
