*pokes head out of emotional snowdrift, gasps for air, shivers* [More:]

Over the last two weeks:

1. My apartment was robbed - they got in through my shoddy post-Soviet windows - and the bastards not only took my laptop, but also my digital camera and ALL my neckties! I'm royally freaked out about coming home to an empty apartment and my housemate is *never* there - and even worse, he's (outwardly, at least) entirely undisturbed by the robbery, saying that the things that were taken were "just things" - which would be true if I could replace the hundreds of photos I lost or even afford to replace the laptop (Macbooks are hard to find here).

2. In a further bizarre twist, my library cards and a bunch of other not-vital-but-still-important documents, which were in a resealable plastic bag that was also stolen, were found in a "24-hour sauna" in a shady part of town where I've never even been! When I asked over the phone if they had any other documents, they refused to tell me and insisted I go down there and get them myself! The police said they wouldn't even bother going to collect them until "sometime after Christmas".

3. My gig as Santa meant 16-hour days and left me feeling exploited, especially as I'd been robbed during the week of Santadom.

4. My trip to Paris to visit friends for Christmas was fun but waaaaay too short.

5. I just returned to Riga from Vilnius, Lithuania last night after a long, uncomfortable bus ride and all I wanted to do was sleep, but the neighbors in the ginormous tower-block complex where I live are really, really into fireworks and didn't stop setting them off from 10 in the evening to 3 in the morning.

6. I was going to go make my zucchini bread this morning but realized that I didn't have the recipe anymore after the laptop was stolen.

Understandably, my Metachat cards have yet to be mailed. Let's hope I get them out for Orthodox Christmas!

Taz, no one at home has a computer anymore; one reason I think the thieves must have been our neighbors (or at least locals who knew our door code - a simple two-digit metal button thing that isn't even electronic) is that we had two houseguests the day we were robbed, who also had their computers stolen - so that's 4 laptops and cameras they got.

The ISP we use actually has the cable serving our modem coming in from a utility box in the hallway outside the apartment with a huge sticker for their company on the outside, so it's apparent to anyone who comes up and down the stairs that we've got at least one computer. It's *really* irresponsible on their part.

I really wanted to like it here in my little neighborhood, even though we didn't really have a chance to interact with people since no one around here speaks English, and my housemate's girlfriend is Latvian, which is not really the favored language in my mostly-Russophone neighborhood. The month before the robbery was great - I was getting into baking, I was making plans for staying on another year - and now I'm questioning all those things.

I certainly don't feel safe with my repaired window, and the landlady hasn't really agreed to make any real changes, aside from screwing the balcony door which was broken through shut. Work has been as minimally helpful as possible, unfortunately; they didn't even want to call the police because they were worried about some immigration stuff (even though I'm totally legal, the owner of the place I work (my boss' boss, and the person who calls all the shots) is really paranoid, and even told me not to call her unless I really needed to talk to her.

Mostly I'm bummed that I can't trust my neighbors anymore. The robbery happened when people were home - between 2 in the afternoon and 10 at night - right across a pathway from a kindergarten and in the middle of a complex that houses, literally, thousands of people. The neighbors, of course, claim to have heard nothing, even though the balcony door was bashed in with a boot and basically destroyed, and to get to my balcony in the first place, the thieves would have had to have climbed up the cage-like covering of the exterior of the neighbors' balconies.

Aaaaargh.

OK, rant over. Thanks for the whuffles!

A pile of whuffles, to be dumped directly on your head. Poor bunny!

(The cards will be mailed when they get mailed. No worries.)

Are you going to be able to get a new laptop? I wish we hadn't given away our oldest box and monitor, now, because we could have sent that to you. Of course, the thieves wouldn't deign to steal it (or even our regular computers here, for that matter), so it would have been safe. :/

Ugh. This sucks so much. But wait a bit before you make up your mind whether to stay or leave. We were robbed by neighbors in New Orleans, and then also (to a much lesser scale - about 20 CDs) right after we moved to Greece. Again, someone in the building we moved into. So ... you know, it's one of those stomach-clenching things, but it can happen pretty much anywhere. I know you are going to feel weird for a while, just go ahead and feel it. It gets better.

Geez that totally sucks, mdonley. Nothing like feeling that you're on your own in the wilderness. No wonder you're freaked out! Adding whuffles, pooch licks & tail wags, & cat purrs into the mix. Hopefully the rest of 2008 will be an improvement.

Aw, dude, that is awful! You are right- one of the worst things about being robbed is the feeling of violation. (Though losing all your photos miserable, too!!)

*HUG*

Oh man. That definitely sucks.

But the zucchini bread recipe: you do remember you posted it here, right? So if you can write it down wherever you are, you can make it again, and if anyone deserves some zucchini bread today, it's you.

Ah man, that is terrible. Worse to know that you and your houseguests were targeted in some way. I wonder about your second item - the i.d. cards etc. Do they want you to come get it, because they are expecting a bribe?

Also, if it is not your neighbours or someone you know, perhaps they have some other reasons not to speak out.

Take care. And whuffles too.

Sheesh, that is indeed rough. Hope you have a much better year ahead.

How very crappy.
At least if you stay, even if not in the same apartment, you'll really have weighed the reasons why.

That's just...rotten.

To restore some of your trust in your neighbors, it's possible that they really didn't see anything. There might be thousands of people living in the neighborhood, but this doesn't mean they're constantly on the lookout for something to happen. Most of the time, they're just minding their own business, not paying attention to anything outside their circle. The ones living right next to you might have been at home, but they were hardly looking out the window all the time. And the weird noises from your balcony might have been just, you know, weird noises (if they noticed them at all, that is).

The robbers didn't necessarily have to be locals. You don't need to know the door code to get in - pretending that you're visiting a friend is enough. Some social engineering will open even the securest door. Or maybe it wasn't even locked (this happens way too often). Who knows, they might have gone on recon several weeks ago and were expecting to find only one or two computers, but got lucky.
