As noted on Metafilter, Oscar Peterson died last night. Some of his versions of Christmas tunes, inside.

I often feel a little silly grieving for celebrities. After all, as much as Oscar Peterson has ever been part of my life, he still will be. I've still got the records. But I did feel quite a pang of sorrow over this. These men: Guaraldi, Peterson, Ramsey and Brubeck are men my father saw perform every chance he got. They are the records of my childhood and their sounds are the sounds my father makes, when he sits at the piano in our house.
I never saw Oscar Peterson play live until after his stroke. It was still amazing. I am sorry he is gone.
