Jodie Foster finally comes out! (Have the lambs stopped screaming, Clarice?)
Sooo kinda spooky just to me and not really that I was posting this

Chickapeee? Tae ina wiiin?

When you were posting this.

Jee Whiz. Thank goodness. Good for her.
posted by rainbaby 12 December | 20:09
I debated about posting this.

I'm glad -- it was an open secret. But I also think that she should be able to keep her private life private, if she wants.

And I say that having had a ginormous, lifelong crush on her, and having wanted her to confirm it as much as anyone.

Anyway. Yay.

Chickapeee? Tae ina wiiin?

I taught my three year old to say this and sway back and forth. No one ever remembers that movie. Oh! The guy who played the newspaper kid was the roommate of a friend from LSU. We all thought he was going to go big time after that. Didn't happen.
posted by ColdChef 12 December | 20:13
You know what it is, though? You want to know that she's happy. If she'd have come out and said that she was in a fulfilling relationship with a man and had been secretly so for fifteen years, I'd have been just as happy for her.

Granted, I wouldn't have felt the urge to post about it...

Go Jodie!

This is where we diverge.

Thanks to the internet magic of IMDB, I just found out that my friend's roommate Sean was not only in "Nell", but he was also in "After Diff'rent Strokes: When the Laughter Stopped"

Awesome. (WOW. And his SON was in Deadwood. I'm getting old.)

No one ever remembers that movie.

It's why mr. rossi won't let me name one of our kids Nell.

Good for Jodie. I love her.

There was a blind item out a few weeks prior to this that said a long-closed actress from a small town was going to come out of the closet and announce her engagement to her girlfriend. We all thought it was Queen Latifah (I still think it might be).
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 12 December | 20:25
In other news, Peter O'Toole enjoys the occasional beverage and Michael Jackson is not the ideal babysitter.
posted by jonmc 12 December | 20:26
Wow, could Queen Latifah be gay? She'd be one of the people on my list, should I ever switch teams.
posted by Miko 12 December | 20:27
I am so starting to wish MeCha had favorites, so I could favorite jonmc's joke.

But in real life, I'm deeply glad we don't have favorites. SO I'll just say: hehehe!
posted by Miko 12 December | 20:28
Anyone who saw that movie remembers it for it's sheer misguided audacity. I'd love to see your kid do that, ColdChef. FUnny.

Oh ColdChef, you are younger than I. I looked up my LSU Actor Guy, and he must have graduated in. . .mmm. . .88? He's doing great though, thanks to Souderbergh (sp? wasn't he LSU?) Ocean's 11 and such, and apparently appears in Waitress. (I went to Tulane.)

Yes, good for Jodie, and for everyone, I guess.
posted by rainbaby 12 December | 20:29
For some reason I thought she was already out years ago, but I still think she rocks and is classy as hell.

Sean's IMDB Page

Steven Soderbergh is from Baton Rouge, but I don't think he ever went to LSU. When I was a student, his father was one of my professors.

I remember what a big deal it was when "Sex, Lies & Videotape" came out...that is...until people found out what it was about. Still one of my favorites, though.
posted by ColdChef 12 December | 20:36
This reminds me of a high school friend of mine who wrote me when we were both in college to tell me he was gay.

A fact I'd been aware of since we were both in 7th grade.

There was a follow-up story a little later that confirmed it was Queen Latifah. I'm pretty sure, at least.
posted by puke & cry 12 December | 20:45
Yeah, but then Latifah denied it.

In actual shocking celebrity news, Jessica Alba = knocked the hell up. Totally didn't see that coming.

Eddie's IMBD page. Never mind, I'm Sean's age!
posted by rainbaby 12 December | 20:51
Also, TPS, they showed one of your comments in the ONTD fox story. "Heeeeerpes."
posted by puke & cry 12 December | 20:52
Then there's this comment on the article:

What a nightmare for the children. Why can't Hollywood weirdoes keep it to themselves?

- Ros Power, Edinburgh, Scotland

What assholes there are in the world.

I saw her Charlie Rose interview a couple months when she was on press junket flogging The Brave One, for all the good it did that turkey. In response to many questions, her eyes darted around, she blinked liked she was failing a lie detector test, and she just looked hunted.

Maybe, with this, she'll feel less like a rabbit gone to ground in front of the baying hounds.
posted by paulsc 12 December | 20:55
I bet this guy feels extra stupid right now.
posted by jonmc 12 December | 20:57
You think John Hinckley feels like the world's biggest idiot round or about now?

Or is he all like "But she'll turn! For meeee!"
posted by hangashore 12 December | 20:58
jonmc by a nose.

Miko, please tell me you're kidding and you are fully aware of Miss Latifahs assured geh-ness.
posted by parannoyed 12 December | 21:07
That was on a post about Jessica Alba, if I recall.

Yeah, it was her without make-up if I remember correctly.

Y'know, my oft-mentioned lesbian ex looked a little bit like Jodie Foster*. Coincidence? I think not.

*like Jodie Foster crossed with Marcie from Peanuts, but my point stands
posted by jonmc 12 December | 21:19
Not kidding. I'm pretty out of it. It's amazing I know who sho is, but that's more due to her awesomeness than my with-it-nes (or lack thereof).
posted by Miko 12 December | 21:19
HEEERPEEES!!!
Ahahahaha!

You should post BAAABIIIEEES!!!! to the "she's pregged" post, just for symmetry.
posted by jrossi4r 12 December | 21:23
"she's pregged"

I prefer 'pregola,' sounds more...organic somehow.

Holy shit, the ONTD people are going crazy over my HEEEERPES comment. People are even making user icons out of the screencapped comment! I'm faaaaaaaamous!!! I feel like I should go do coke or something.

Be careful. 20 years from now, it'll be my booze-withered face spewing your secrets on Behind The Blog: Metachat.

And I'm wishing we had them so I could favorite this! Or would that be a little TOO meta?

*Shakes fist in an mock-infuriated-but-admiring way at jonmc for posting first and funnier than I could have*

Not surprised, but I'm happy she's comfortable enough to come out.
posted by deborah 12 December | 22:22
I'm glad for her. I'm glad that's she's happy, and comfortable, and fulfilled. For Jodie, it seems like such an act of courage, to say "this is who I am."

(She is such a role model of mine, by the way. I have complete respect for her as an actress and as a person, quite possibly because she's very private about her life outside movies)

Tangentially, it sucks having to walk this fine line between, "This is a big deal for her", and "This SHOULDN'T be a big deal."

In another world, someone's Foster Mom is Jodie Lesbian.
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur 12 December | 22:42
Good for her. The idea of peole staying in the closet makes me sad, I don't think anyone should deny who they are.

However, I don't know if she was ever really in the closet, so to speak. I mean, people only assumed she was straight, I don't recall her ever saying so. She just seems to be one of those people who doesn't want her life to be news (and given the current "oh, she's wearing underwear today. that's a win for her... even though we can all SEE them!" atmosphere in hollywood, that's pretty refreshing.)

Yet another item for the "Reasons I'll never get to marry Jodie Foster." list.
Today is a sad day.

posted by Atom Eyes 13 December | 10:54
Why is this shit still news? We supposedly live in a society where we respect each others wish to be individual and to honestly represent to the world our true selves. Or so we are told. The fact that people still get excited about someone finally coming clean about their sexuality confirms that nothing has really changed in our attitudes since the '50s. That makes me sad.
posted by dg 13 December | 16:07
I think the tension is in the fact that a lot of anti-gay or homophobic people respect/like/admire very many people who are, in fact, gay - and the activist gay community has always said those people should make their status public for that very reason. But you are absolutely right; once we get to a point where this sort of thing is not news, or at all remarkable will be a significant step out of the modern dark age.
