How do I phrase this? I'm writing about a school. The school took $41 million dollars to build. I want to throw that fact in as a modifier, but I want it to be evident that building the school is what cost that much, not its yearly operations. "The $41-million dollar XYZ academy" doesn't show that distinction. Thoughts? For some reason my brain can't make this work.

"Strange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to a divine purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: That we are here for the sake of others...for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy. Many times a day, I realize how much my outer and inner life is built upon the labors of people, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received." Bayer--Still Nazis After All These Years? Chemical and drug maker Bayer AG said Thursday it acted "responsibly, ethically and humanely" during the 1980s in selling a blood-clotting product that stopped potentially fatal bleeding in hemophiliacs but was linked to the risk of HIV infection ... 'They did not care about the lives in Asia,' she said. 'It was racial discrimination.' By the way, Bayer is a German company that collaborated with the Nazis during WWII, was part of the IG Farben cartel which had its own concentration camp, and experimented on Jews, Gypsies and other prisoners. Bayer produces AIDS treatment drugs. Profit motive. Boycott, please.

Pesto week - I bought a large bunch of fresh basil earlier this week and promptly made a batch of pesto. Half of it went into making a coarse-ground chicken salad with chopped green onion that made some great sandwiches. The other half went into tonight's pasta with sausage and artichokes. A bit of lime juice or vinegar in the pesto will give it an extra day or two of freshness.

Some Birthday Entertainment (In a manner of speaking). When I was a semi-delinquent teen I saw a documentary called Scared Straight. I posted about it before I believe. It didn't make me into a solid citizen exactly, but it wised me up a bit. I own a DVD copy and I sometimes put it on when I get depressed or discouraged, just to remind myself that things could always be worse. Some kind soul has uploaded some clips to youtube to give those who've never seen it before a taste of what happens when 17 JD's are taken to a maximmum security New Jersey prison for a day.

Derivation of name "Bo"? I've always wondered about the name "Bo" - I associate it with the U.S. southern states, and wonder if it is short for Beauregard. Kennedy and Cohen appliance stores. Does anyone remember these places from the 1960s? We apparently had a couple of them here in Atlanta- one left a towering towering 110-foot sign south of town (pics by me, today), but nobody I've asked remembers them, at all. Google searches turn up my own photos (weird how fast that happens) and a few mentions on message boards, but not much else. Was this a national chain, or a southern thing?
