Posting This from the Seattle Library What does anyone think of this building? I think it's ugly, jarring, unrestful, etc but I RESPECT it and I am glad that someone got to build their vision, even if I don't like it much.

I am at this stage rigging workshop learning metric asstons about how to deal with rigging so I can go back and kick some drama teacher but about all the unsafe stuff they do that I knew was unsafe but never had the lingo for. Now I do.

How's everyone been, anyway? Mudpuppie, how is your mom?
Oh hey, I was going to post a comment about the library, and then I saw my name. Weird.

I think the library is ugly. I don't respect architecture that's jarring for the sake of being jarring. But then again, I'm a grouch.

My mom is doing well, thanks. She's still in a lot of pain, but she's recovering pretty well. It's just going to take a while.

How's your trip to the Emerald City?

It's nice. My best friend lives over on Bainbridge so I am staying over there, which means a long commute but it's worth it. She gets me up at 5:30 with coffee, and we chat until 6:30 then I get on the bus. I could be a warrior as a commuter if I wanted. My walk to work is much better at home, though.

I skipped out of the seminar early this aft. so I could bop around seattle a bit. I leave afterwards tomorrow then a heavy day at work on Friday, so this is my only chance to do this.

Took the monorail downtown and just bumming around until the 5:25 boat. I had seen the library from the outside but never been in it.

I think that building is a big ole pile of steaming poo. I'm so disappointed with Rem Koolhaas for that wart on the face of Seattle.

I think the library is a fucking eyesore, and I hope it falls over on whoever signed off on it as soon as possible.

This thread is worthless without pictures...

At this angle, it looks like a high-tech book cover WITHOUT A BOOK IN IT.

I dunno. The Library doesn't offend me as much as EMP does.

The neighborhood branches are much nicer, however.

Bainbridge a long commute? Hah! I have several friends who come in from Bremerton! And I'm friends with a girl who commuted from Quilcene every day.

I love ferry rides, tho.

They both look like someone left them out in the sun too long.

And Quilcene to Seattle is a hell of a daily commute.

hmm. what Specklet said.

And good to hear your mom's making progress, 'pupp.

The library was worth checking out, but I think another remodel is already overdue.

Does the Library work? Does it fulfill its function as a Library well? It seems impossible to get a sense of this building without context, but it doesn't seem to offer what I want from a Library - accessible stacks, meeting places, places to read, use the internets, listen to music, information desks, and art display.

I refuse to set foot in the place, theora55, but a local architecture critic says "This library, incredibly, is an uncomfortable place to read."

Man, that's an ugly building. That reading room looks awful - at least we can be sure of never getting something like that here, because that glass ceiling would make it like sitting inside a solar panel in the summer.

Quite credibly, I'd say. That building looks almost as hideous as the HMS De Young, which has been beached in Golden Gate park for several years now. But somehow, the fact of being a li-bary makes it even worse.

Sigh. My only hope is to live long enough to see these starchitectural monstrosities demolished

That's what they did with the de Young? Holy shit! It was still closed when I moved up here to Seattle. I have so many happy memories of the time I spent wandering that museum. Ai yi yi, did they fuck that up or what?!

It's a very well designed prison library. A perfect exemplar of the new age of urban security architecture. Koolhaas should serve a life sentence - in that building.

I think you might have mistakenly linked to a picture of an Atlantic Wall bunker instead of an art museum, because an art museum would be pretty. Right? Or maybe it's a Jawa sandcrawler.

I have always felt that the new Seattle library is a hideous cross between an airport and a chicken coop. It's easily one of the least inviting and relaxing buildings I've ever been in.
