I am having an ass day, and need to vent.[More:]

The assness:

1. I got home from band practice last night to find out that my cat, Ella, lost at least one tooth. Her mouth was all bloody, and one of her top canines was missing. This morning, she just kept drooling really badly, and she won't eat. She's 12, and my wife's had her since she was a kitten, and we're both upset. She'll see a vet in about two hours, but the waiting sucks.

2. On top of that, my band has a show tonight, which I've been pretty excited about. Except that I heard from the booking person this morning that they had their time slots flipped around, so we're playing at 10:30 instead of 9. That's annoying, but shouldn't be that big a deal; but our drummer and other guitarist, who both can be babies about their bedtimes, are loudly grousing about just not doing the show. I called them on it and talked them out of it, but I'm still really mad and there's a good chance one or both of them will be all sulky tonight.

3. And then, in the background to all of this, the area right outside my office is being renovated, so it's power-tool-o-rama here today. Ugh.

OK. Thanks for listening.
1. In a place like LA or NY, 10:30, rather than 9, could be an advantage.

Other places, not so good. I do not know where you are.

2. They are doing seismic upgrade on my building and I accused the project manager of stationing a guy right on the other side of the wall from me and taking his biggest hammer and just BANGING FOR DAYS UPON DAYS UPON DAYS. There is no way that his incessant beating on my wall has anything to do with this project.

Plus, the a/c's been out on account of this.

3. Get your cat's remaining teeth cleaned.

1. Yeah, I don't understand why they're having such hissyfits about playing 10:30; that's still on the early side for our shows (in Minneapolis). 9's unusually early.

2. I'm glad not to have a jackhammer to deal with. The saws and drills are bad enough.

3. And yeah, we'll need to get them cleaned. My wife's been really opposed to that, because she's afraid of the cat being put under anesthesia, but, well, it's kind of hit a crisis point.

Is she an indoor cat or is it possible she's been in an accident or a fight?

I had a cat who lived for many years with a missing canine and it didn't stop him eating. In fact, it seemed to create a space in his mouth for him to suck in more food.

She's all-indoor, all the time. She does occasionally tussle with our other cat (but not the dog; Ella has enough force of will that the dog reveres her, despite having a 50-pound weight advantage), but I don't think that was the cause.

If you are in a band with people who are concerned about their bedtime, you are in THE WRONG BAND.

Yeah, part of me thinks that, but the other part of me says that I've been playing with these guys for nearly 10 years and like playing with them, even if they act more 50 than 30 sometimes.

No actual criticism meant, you realize. Just a bit of joshing from a jealous guy who couldn't even be in a rubber band.

And not to scare you, but any kind of bleeding in the mouth for a dog or cat can be quite serious -- infections there can travel rapidly to the brain. Make sure your vet takes dentistry seriously. Hope she's OK.

I hope Ella is alright, cobra. Keep us updated, please.

Just got back from the vet; she's spending the night there, so that they can put her under tomorrow morning and take a look at where the tooth was (they're not sure if it fell out or broke off, and when the vet tried to look, Ella gave her a close-up of her remaining teeth in action). She's full of painkillers and antibiotics right now. I feel good knowing that she's being looked after, but it just about killed me when I went home to pick her up and saw the way she was drooling (the vet said it's probably pain making her drool).

And on the other front, the band hissy fit continues unabated. Chee-rist.

Anyway, thanks, everybody.
