The Simpsons Movie comes out today! I'm going to see it at 4:30, right after work. Yesterday I was fortunate enough to catch this delightful interview with Nancy Cartwright, voice of Bart and Nelson, on NPR's Fresh Air. It really is a great listen; she comes across as friendly, genuine, and hilarious. I smiled the whole way home.

I do know I'm getting old, and so this is probably simply an attempt to rationalize that away, but: My hair used to get sun-bleached really easily, going from dark brown to almost reddish blonde in the summer when I was young enough to have summer breaks that gave me time to be outside. I've been outside more this summer than in years past, and rather than blonde, my hair just seems to be going gray. Could this be *caused* by the sun, or am I totally grasping at (aging) straws?

This happened two blocks from my house. It really sums up the neighborhood--a real mix of rich and poor, with very little in between. My small block has $600,000 condos--not houses, but condos--and a store-front church led by the lovable-but-crazy Reverend Bynum, folks who get boutique milk delivery and others who get their crack 4 doors down, fancy BMWs and ragged-out beaters. Usually, though, there's an at least uneasy coexistence. Sure, I was holding a gun to your daughter's head a moment ago, but, hey, you're nice, so how about a hug? Bizarre.

Weirdness. A guy I spent almost all of my young adolescent life pining for has joined facebook. I, of course, requested friend status. Still weird that I get butterflies thinking about him considering it was something like 13 years ago.

Lou Rawls WTF? When I was a child, there were two different social fart rituals: For the first, you would have to say "safety" before someone else said "doorknob," else they could hit you until you grabbed a doorknob and said safety. The other, and weirder one, was that you had to say "Lou Rawls" or anyone who had heard your fart could hit you once.

Why "Lou Rawls"? Did anyone else have a similar ritual? What the fuck?

My father hypothesized that it had something to do with Rawls's rich, deep voice, which may have sounded like a particularly resonant fart.

TopsyTurvy TestMe? After reading this askme comment, of course I had to go take the test to reassure myself that I'm a benevolent creator, which is pretty much what all the tests say - because this is how I imagine myself, and thus reliably answer the questions in a way that leads to this result (however accurate or inaccurate it might be). But one of these days that isn't July 4, we should do one of these tests (this one is too long) with a twist: everybody participating should answer as another member (how they think that member would answer), and see how close or far apart the results would be.
