I sent this e-mail to the head of the History Department at Yale:

President Bush holds a BA in History from Yale, but he often makes decisions and says things that seem to indicate he actually doesn't know much about history. Is his ignorance of history an accurate reflection of the quality of a Yale History degree?

Calling a newspaper about a private email would be a thoroughly asshole-ish thing to do, IMHO. And no-one who cares about what the head of History at Yale thinks likes Bush anyway. But it's an excellent personal anecdote to be stored up for future dinner party use.

Nope; as I understand it, they don't know each other, and it was an official communication from a representative of Yale. And email is not a privileged form of communication. It'd be totally kosher.

I suspect he would have given a different response had he been informed in advance that his reply might be published - I don't think it's right to publish something that would reasonable be considered private communication. It would be interesting to see what his response would be to notice that you were intending to pass on the message to the local paper, though.
