Every morning I awaken with a song in my head -- actually, two songs.[More:]
My alarm is a repeated two-tone chirp (1-2-1...1-2-1...1-2-1...1-2-1), and inspires a mental mashup of the same two songs: Naughty By Nature's "OPP" and Toots & the Maytals' cover of John Denver's "Country Roads." They go surprisingly well together, and I usually sing bits of both in the shower.

So I was surprised when, yesterday and today, I woke up with Blue Oyster Cult's "Cities on Flame With Rock & Roll" running through my head:

My heart is black, and my lips are cold
Cities on flame with rock and roll
Three thousand guitars they seem to cry
My ears will melt, and then my eyes

Oh, let the girl, let that girl, rock and roll
Cities on flame now, with rock and roll

Gardens of nocturne, forbidden delights
Reins of steel, and it's alright
Cities on flame, with rock and roll
Marshall will buoy, but Fender control

Let the girl, let that girl rock and roll
Cities on flame now, with rock and roll

My heart is black, and my lips are cold
Cities on flame with rock and roll
Three thousand guitars they seem to cry
My ears will melt, and then my eyes

Let the girl, let that girl rock and roll
Cities on flame now, with rock and roll
For some reason I've always loved "OPP." It's quite the toe-tapper.

Jackson 5 - ABC

I kinda like OPP too--I'm a sucker for those now-here's-my-first-example verses, and I think Treach is a rather underrated MC.

I usually awaken with a song in my bowels actually, but a cup of coffee clears it right out.

I wake up with the same embarrassing song running through my head almost every morning, and I have such a mental block against it that I cannot for the life of me remember what it is any time except right when I wake up.

Some cheesy 70s love song.

Right, so you know how the bass & drums come in off the Jackson 5 rip, "dun dun dunnnnn dun da-dun," and then there's the three-tone chirp, "dee-doo-deet!" and it repeats, that's basically the rhythm track in the intro, right? Imagine, instead of Dave dropping a load on you ("OPP, how can I explain it/I'll take you frame by frame it"), right at the start of the vocals, you hear instead Toots Hibbert's cry, "Almost heaven, west Jamaica/True ridge mountains, shining Minko River;" man, that's mashup heaven right there.

Ooh, that is nice.

(There's a Z-Trip remix of 'ABC' that's really, really good, too, on the rather mediocre Motown Remixed album. If memory serves, they gave him access to the master tapes. If I think of it, I'll post it when I get home tonight.)

Some mornings it's the other way around, with the Maytals backing up the rap. And the "dee-doo-deet!" at every break.

I wake up to "Gonna Fly Now", as that's my cellphone's alarm.

If I wake up with a song in my head, I just hit myself in the head with a mallet and it clears right up.
