Continuation of the movie theame. Inspired by a topic a little further down the page:[More:]
What is the ONE movie that you have seen that is unlikely most of us have, and that you would unreservedly recommend.

As I put at the end of the related thread, mine is

Black Cat, White Cat
Jesus of Montreal

The Hanging Garden

(This is not my "one" but it is one that comes to mind.)

Mabrosi Maybe a lot of people have seen it, but I've never met them. Regardless, I watch a lot of movies, and I think about Mabrosi more often than most others and I saw it when it was released in the theater.

Sweet Movie. It should be in everyone's nightmares.

For me, I'm not sure there's such a thing as an unreserved recommendation. I mean, I like the qatsi movies very, very much, but there are folks who I'd never in a million years recommend 'em to. Ditto Ghost Dog or The Big Lebowski or Back to School. Some people just don't like black-and-white, or subtitles, or animation, or comedy, or mainstream, or indie, or you get my drift.

Thank you for mentioning this one! It's a much overlooked film, and one of the most beautiful I've seen.

The Hanging Garden

I am very proud of the writer and director of this great movie. We were friends from a summer arts program in the late 80s. It's great to see that people do grow up and achieve the dreams of their youths, sometimes. Second the recommendation.

Turkish Star Wars (links to final scene - spoiler alert)
JC - Jesus Christ is born again on Earth. But his father is a hardcore Southern Baptist, and during his teen years, Jesus rebels, joining a biker gang and leading an LSD-fueled pilgrimage to "the West" to fight "the establishment."
Bad Boy Bubby

The first two are goodbad, the last one is just plain awesome (but kinda hard to watch).

I'd add The House of Mirth. A little recognized but absolutely exquisite period drama, in the same vein as Wings of the Dove.

Also, and perhaps a bit more obscure, is Central Station.

Yeah, the first five or six movies that came to mind for me were ones I realized I couldn't recommend without some kind of qualifier, like "You have to be patient with it" or "Not for the squeamish."

For me too, and I can never understand why more people haven't seen it. I'll be forever thrilled that I got to see it on film. I've actually been kind of afraid to see it on DVD as I'm not sure how all the natural low light shots come out.

hellbient-Sweet Movie is ridiculously awesome.

Hey, Sweet Movie is coming out on June 19 from the Criterion Collection. I'll put it on my wish list.

I mentioned Titus in the other thread, but I'll mention another movie here: Haxan, a silent Swedish sort-of-documentary about the medieval practice of witchcraft. Several scenes are re-enacted, and the film's director plays the part of the devil. Later on (I don't remember the year) it was recut and re-released as a cult film, with an avant-garde jazz score, along with a voiceover by William S. Burroughs. Criterion puts out a disc with both versions.

oh, yeah, Haxan's awesome too.

Sante Sangre! I loved that, Otis. Thank you for reminding me. I should find and buy, post haste.

I too, find it hard to recommend without a disclaimer, but I will say, if you know MacBeth, "Scottland, PA" is pretty darn good. I know MGL likes it too. Maura Fucking Tierney.

(I know, she's not Robert Fucking Shaw by any means, but it's fun to say it.)

"Secondhand Lions". I loved it, but never heard of it before Mr. V brought it home.
