Japanese question Silly question, but I can't find it on Google: How do you pronounce kaiten, as in kaiten-zushi?→[More:]
We're getting our first conveyor belt sushi bar in town and I'd like to be able to pronounce it properly.
I think the emphasis is on kai ... kait-in /fair warning
I posted some videos here about the 'other' kaiten -- World War II Japanese suicide torpedoes.
There aren't really any stressed syllables (though the "kai" and the "zu" naturally drive the words), and each is held for the same amount of time (think of Dee Dee Ramone starting a song: "1, 2, 3, 4"). "Kai" rhymes with "high," but is somewhat cut off before "ten," which sounds just like "10." "Zu" as in "zoo," but don't linger on the vowel before "shi," which sounds like "she," but the vowel sound here can be cut off almost entirely, if you want ("zushi" is said exactly like "sushi," but with a "Z" in front).
