That can't be a list of the "51 Best Magazines Ever" because not only is it US-centric, they leave out The Economist, OMNI and Scientific American and instead fill it with useless fluff like Details, Tiger Beat and People.
I just had to laugh when they mentioned "The Spectator" first. I have an antique book "The Spectator, Volume the First" dated 1765. It's not in great shape (the leather covers have come apart from the binding) but it is rather entertaining (once you get used to the "s's" that look like "f's").
That reflects a lot of the thinking behind the list. And the New Yorker should most definitely be #1.
There are a lot of good magazines missing, and a lot of bad magazines on the list, but it's still a good idea to think about good magazines. Magazines have contributed greatly to cultural change, in a way that newspapers and television shows really haven't.
I'm glad Spy was on there, though. I really miss Spy.
