does anyone know where you can find past modern rock charts for free? [More:]
Friggin' Billboard wants money for you to look at them, but surely they are out there somewhere for free?
How far past? This guy has the year-end "Top 106.7" from KROQ for 1980-1989. A good resource for the evolution of the radio format and 'what's popular', but with the caveat that KROQ embraced a number of weird or outrageous novelty songs that almost nobody else did. For a more National or more recent view, I dunno.

About's lists may help. Not dead on point but it has pop and classic rock top 30' and 100's.

weretable, do you want the charts for a particular week? I think they would be very difficult to find. I've tried. If you want the charts or "top hits" for a particular year, they're everywhere. Example.

Yeah, those KROQ lists seem to be what I am looking for. I will see if I can find the 90s KROQ charts, maybe they are out there somewhere. I might search usenet too, everything has been posted there at one time or another.

I was mainly trying to find the top 80 or 100 or whatever songs for each year from the late eighties and early nineties. Specifically the alternative/modern rock type stuff.

I was working on the never-ending task of going through boxes and boxes of junk and organizing/tossing stuff and I found some CDs that not only had I forgotten about, but I had forgotten even liking that music to begin with. I'm basically trying to refresh my memory and reclaim lost musical loves. And maybe find some stuff that I missed/looked over back then as well. I found about ten CDs that I do not remember ever buying, although after finding them I remember liking the music.

Did I mention my memory really sucks? Because it does.

I am totally going to do a big radio set of late 80s/early nineties alt rock stuff in a few days when I get this shit ripped and/or downloaded and sorted out. Nostalgia! Fun fun fun!

Thanks for linking the more complete KROQ list. I have a boatload of similar stuff myself (and when Monkeyfilter was trying to set up their own radio, I contributed a 7 hour A-Z of KROQ 80s music) So I'll be listening.

Just in case you decide you want to look at the weekly charts, they can be found in back issues of Billboard or Rolling Stone, which are available on microfilm at the largest branch of your largest local library (for you, the university, I'd guess).

Also, what are the CDs?

oh my god weretable, thank you SO much for posting that second link to modern rocklists. holy shit how on earth could i have forgotten how much i loved the cocteau twins? and yea, i don't understand why i don't like they might be giants (i've tried) but yep, they still pretty much suck for me.

these lists reminded me of so many artists i listened to in my ill-spent youth. kate bush, check. jesus jones, check. erasure, omg yes!

plus that list has links to the WOXY Best 500 lists, and i've been listening to that station (first their FM broadcasts, now their webradio) for pretty much as long as they've been around.
