03 March 2007

It's been 14 weeks, 6 days since I quit Give me some love?[More:]Although I have to admit that the reason that I managed to quit for more than a day this time is because I did it for myself, not because of someone getting on my case or to make someone happy. I waited until I was ready.

But!

I've noticed that the most annoying, strident, holier-than-thou anti-smokers are the least supportive of your quitting. They don't even remember that you smoked in the first place. To them, quitting smoking is like a switch you just turn off, and why can't those darned smokers all do it?

*Pats self on back*
Congrats - Keep up the good work.

The most annoying anti-smoking people in my experience are ex-smokers themselves. So, it may just be that they aren't giving you support because nobody understands how much THEY suffered, and they didn't get any support, and etc, etc.

Rather dangerously, the most empathic support seems to come from people who have tried and failed to stop themselves. Which, to me, is like trying to cure heroin addicts by shoving them in a room with a load of heroin abusers and a kilo of heroin.

I am one of those never-smoked people but I also realize how hard it is to quit. I applaud you and I hope you make it through one more day.

Are you feeling better?

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE!

All those great rewards, better skin, nicer smelling clothes and hair, better sense of smell and much better health in the long run - all well deserved. *pat on back* I know it's hard, keep up the good work.

Yup, you really have to want to quit. Ever burn a hole in your shirt BEFORE you ever get a chance to wear it? That's what finally pushed me over the edge.

I've never smoked either (well, only when I accidentally set myself on fire for a brief couple of seconds - ouch), but I, too, applaud you for giving up. Doing it for yourself is fantastic. I wouldn't worry about people ignoring you - you're doing it for yourself, not for them. You want support? You can get it here :)

You rock. And you're stronger than me - I made it from December 3 to about February 1 and then it was all over and I'm back right where I started from. So.

the most empathic support seems to come from people who have tried and failed to stop themselves.

YAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP IT UP!!!!!!!!!! YOU'RE AWESOME!!!!!!!! I WISH I COULD DO IT TOO!!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a former smoker and am very anti-smoking now (mostly because of recently being diagnosed with asthma), but I can still empathize with those who are in the process of quitting. One of my best friends just this week decided to go from a pack and a half a day to zero. I cautioned him not to do that, and to wean himself slowly.

Anyway, congrats on 14 weeks of being smoke-free. I know how tough it is to resist that temptation.

WOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Congratulations, that's awesome!

I was actually having this conversation with a friend of mine, whose boyfriend is trying to quit. The friend said that he's stopped positively reinforcing the quitting, because the boyfriend has tried to quit so many times and failed that the friend is just annoyed at having to be constantly cheerful about something the boyfriend can't seem to stick to.

Which... I don't know. Seems a bit harsh, but I've never dated a heavy smoker.

For me, I would say that as a non-smoker, I often just forget that other people smoke, and so I *can* actually just forget that anyone used to smoke. It's not something I think about except when I'm currently being annoyed by the smoke itself.

So! I will try to do better at supporting my friends in quitting, starting with you! Yay, you! You can do it! You've made so much progress already! :)

Hooray!

I had a bad few days over NYCC weekend because I bummed cigarettes off of people. And another time when I bought a pack, smoked two or three cigarettes out of it, then was so ashamed of myself that I threw the rest of the pack away.

My boyfriend is one of those people who can't believe that yes, there is such a thing as peer pressure and to addictive and insecure people like me, it's pretty dangerous. At least he understands now why I can't hang around with smokers very often. Too much temptation.
