Yesterday afternoon, I watched some of my DVD's of The White Shadow.[More:] Odd, but for a show set in a ghetto high school near the end of one of the scuzziest periods in American history, I find it comforting. But that's mainly because it reminds me of being a kid. But, even stripped of nostalgia, the show holds up.

The basketball sequences are great and Coach Reeves reminds of my father in his take-no-shit cynicism and of Pips in the way he puts so much effort into his kids. The charcter of Thorpe(on the left) reminds me a little of Joe Famous in his mannerisms. A few of the young actors on the show went on to become prominent movie directors as well. And it has one of TV's great theme songs. Any other Carver High fans here? Anyone else have some obscure program that's inexplicably close to their heart?
Sea Hunt. Sky King.

Believe it or not, I've never heard of The White Shadow. And I watched a lot of TV as a kid, so that IS obscure.

I used to have several friends who'd shared my love of "The New Zoo Revue" when we were all kids. One of them, a tall lanky guy, could do a dead-on impersonation of Henrietta Hippo (but only when he was completely baked).

I really liked The White Shadow too jon. Imagine my surprise when I started playing basketball in high school, and it was kinda boring, compartively.

Very good show that NEVER jumped the shark (but maybe got close with that song they did).

I was a regular White Shadow viewer, but haven't seen it since I was a kid. Doesn't seem like it's one of those shows that still gets shown in reruns. My memory is fuzzy, but it seems like other shows I was watching at that time were Space 1999 and Emergency. There was also a show that had like 4 different ongoing genre stories that ended in cliffhangers every week. Don't remember the name of that one, but I never missed it.

Spent a little time last year with a friend who'd just received the first season of The Greatest American Hero as a gift. Now, I loved that show as a kid ... but I must confess, time has not been entirely kind. The concept/setup is still great, but the execution was cheesey in all the wrong ways.

I wonder ... do DVDs yet exist for the first season of Max Headroom (the actual television series with Matt Frewer and Amanda Pays)?

I watched the first disc of Ultraman the other night. I was maybe nine the last time I saw an episode, but it was almost exactly as I remembered, apart from being in Japanese. There were whole scenes that I recognized.
