Yesterday afternoon, I watched some of my DVD's of
The White Shadow.
→[More:] Odd, but for a show set in a ghetto high school near the end of one of the scuzziest periods in American history, I find it comforting. But that's mainly because it reminds me of being a kid. But, even stripped of nostalgia, the show holds up.
The basketball sequences are great and Coach Reeves reminds of my father in his take-no-shit cynicism and of Pips in the way he puts so much effort into his kids. The charcter of
Thorpe(on the left) reminds me a little of Joe Famous in his mannerisms. A few of the young actors on the show went on to become prominent
movie directors as well. And it has one of TV's great
theme songs. Any other Carver High fans here? Anyone else have some obscure program that's inexplicably close to their heart?
