This just breaks my heart →[More:]
Apologies for the local news link but the NYT site link requires a login.
I don't even follow US football that closely, although I had been interested in the Broncos bid for the playoffs this year with their new quarterback.
I also am not naive enough to think that Denver doesn't struggle with its share of crime and gang activity, and that 'nothing bad could ever happen here', etcetera. However, the crime scene here has always seemed positively microscopic in proportion to other areas I've lived in the U.S. Denver is (generally) an urbane, outdoor-focussed, affluent place to live, and it's the safest large metropolitan area to be out after dark that I've ever been in (and I've been in numerous ones).
I really don't care whether it's Denver, LA or just po-dunk anywhere, and I don't care whether we're talking obscenely overpaid pro football players or the working class neighbours up the street: the fact that someone this evil could perpetrate this manner of senseless act unto another just depresses me.
And finally, I honestly don't know why I'm shocked, or even why I'm taking this personally. I don't much like the media, and I remain cynical about their motives. I guess it boils down to the fact that I personally think this is a
shitty thing to have happened, particularly on New Year's Day in the place I call home.
