I've had the opposite reaction to living in Scotland - over ten years my English accent has gone posher (it was already fairly posh, but you used to be able to easily tell I'm from the Wirral, now I have to be drunk for that to happen.)

I do say 'wee' a lot, though, and have an unnatural affection for 'outwith'. Always called cigarettes fags, mind you - that's not a Scottishism, is it?

OK, I'm calling in a deprogrammer to force you to watch 15 hours of Indians games back to back followed by 3 days of classic rock drive-time radio. We'll make you American again.

I lived in Scotland for a year and every time I speak to someone up there that I know, it only takes about 30 seconds for me to start saying "aye" instead of "yes".

Fags, surely, isn't a Scottishism.

Fags is a british-ism, a really annoying one to pick up because it means something so different in USia.

Indeed. Must make singing along to Supergrass's "Alright" interesting :)

Lucky you. American is boring and I've picked up tons of catchy phrases (that I use without realizing it till people tell me) from Aussies and Scots and Irish.

As my friend Martin from Kenya (who was educated in England and had the BEST accent evar: half Brit/half African) used to tell me:

"Chen, I think you are much more British than American."

(Rs pronounced half-R/half-D by Martin, of course.)

And I love how eveything is "wee" to North Irishers.

"That's a nice wee battleship ye've got there."

The best part about Scottishism is that it sounds like Swedish. When you gotta go 'uit de huus' and when you tell the bairn to calm down you're already speaking swedish. Seriously.
Now as long as you don't kip instead of nap, trot around the house in your baffies while eating a jeely piece and say dinnae instead of don't, you're fine.

I don't know where I picked up "wee" but I use it as well as "aye" which I picked up from online gaming. "Wanker" is another one I use a lot. It ..er.. comes in handy as there are a lot of tossers about.

English/Scots/Irish/Aussie slang is so much more fun than American/Canadian slang.

I wish my (Midwestern USA) dad would stop saying "I'm all fagged out" in public.

I was clothes shopping in Guildford a couple of years ago with an American friend, who was looking for some jeans. We went into Next, and my friend asked the assistant to help her find her size.

"I have no idea about British sizes" she said "but I have an enormous fanny".

Ten minutes later, the saleswoman and I were still unable to speak through our hysterical laughter, tears pouring down our faces, doubled over, heads down, pounding counter with one hand as my friend looked on totally bewildered ...

In the UK 'fanny' means something entirely different from its USian meaning

I was well warned by kind friends of that before I came here, jan! In fact, it was one of three things I was told:

1) Look right, then left
2) Trousers, not pants
3) Arse, not fanny

These should be hung at the customs points into the UK.
