31 December 2006

New Year's in IRC! You know you wanna! East Coast New Years in t-minus 1.5 hours!
So in the 2006 Guinness book, there is bug-eyed Brandy, on the same page with the dog who can fit the most tennis balls in its mouth, 5. Seeing this, you wonder how many tiny chihuahuas it could carry.
Happy New Years, bunnies. I just watched the pretty awesome BBC Scotland New Year's live music show and am woofled on vodka and cranberry.

Fierce love and blessings to every one of you. May your dreams take root and grow.
I have a blog. Mostly I'll be talking about movies and TV, because well, that's mostly what I talk about. But there will also be some verbiage about the online advertising industry, Kansas, and other stuff.

If anyone wants to re-design it so that it looks less like the blogger template and more like its own thing, I'm willing to pay some relatively nominal amount.
AskMeCha: Songs about astrology? I'm making a mix for a work friend who is really really REALLY into astrology. He has astrology-related tattoos. Let's leave it at that. Anyway, I'm starting to get a little stumped so any and all suggestions (and yes, I have "Age of Aquarius" by the Fifth Dimension already) are appreciated. Go!
OMG Gratuitous Self Post!!! I don't blog very much (my previous entry was in October), so I thought I would call attention to it.
cumberbund OMG I'm marrying the most wonderful woman ever tomorrow. As such, I decided to try on the tux (white dinner jacket - think Bogart in Casablanca meets Bond in Casino Royale - very spiffy) I bought in November, just to make sure the holiday nog 'n' grog didn't cause it to shrink.Read more...
It's been one hell of a year. And you nuts have been with us through all of it. So as an end-of-year gift, here's two tunes: the first a song I've been searching for for years and just found a few weeks ago, the second a brilliant piece of mindless boogie that nobody should be without.Read more...

Skinny! NSFW. But not really graphic or anything. Just ladies in underwear.
"Larry King Can Walk???!" I got a kick out of all the comments about Larry King's outfit in this 5 page Oh No They Didn't thread. I didn't know that people "that old" shouldn't wear jeans. What's the magic age when people should stop wearing jeans? I want to know if I should start dressing in muumuus and smocks now. I did see a really fetching housedress at Walmart the other day...

So, I'm trying to write this joke, and it starts like, "President Ford, Saddam Hussein and James Brown walk into a bar..."

Then I got stuck. Any of you MeChites beyond the unfortunate few who were at the NYC MeetUp last night able to help me figure out a punchline?
I normally wouldn't do this on MeCha, but I'm desperate. Anyone (ANYWHERE) want a couple of dogs? A few weeks ago I rescued two incredibly beautiful, loving, intelligent young dogs from a vacant farm where they'd been abandoned as pups. Blackie and Lady were skin and bones when the realtor found them and began feeding them, but then the realtor wanted them gone, so I took them in. Read more...

Radio Metachat. Thought I'd throw a couple of hours radio your ways. If you're interested.
Nice NYE decor, taz! Totally dig the disco ball. Totally.
I'm in the Las Vegas airport and jet lagged out of my mind. That is all.

You know how when you send a text message (with T9 input) sometimes the first word that comes up isn't the word you thought? Like if you enter "cool" it gives you "book". In the "Last Comments" list some usernames that normally have capital letters, like BoringPostcards or LoriFLA, show up all lower case, but others, like KevinSKomsvold show up properly. Why is this?
I'm worried that the consistency, colour, texture, or whatever may not meet her standards, in which case I'd have to know what sort of diet to follow to prepare.

I am a computer idiot. I have a gmail account. If I remember correctly you are able to have two addresses under one account. I want to make another address, but don't know how. My sister says to invite myself, but I am not sure if this is the way to do it. Thanks for any assistance.
I want my money back. Several thousand videos appear to be missing.
I'm back from Minnesota. A few things:
* Pictures are up on flickr.
* My fantasy team laid a big egg when it mattered most. I scored nearly 30 points under my average for the year. Congrats, kyleg, on the big win.
* Christmas was great but now I am looking forward to a lazy extended weekend of doing nothing.
* Hi!
Want to live with a bunny? Or do you know any NYC gals who need to move into an apartment next year?
This is just to say that I should have had more wild and crazy sex while I had the chance.

BP Radio is starting about 30 seconds from now. Some good-mood music (a lot of it's kind of new music) to get me pumped up for climbing on the roof and taking down the Christmas lights later on today.
A night to remember... A platonic male friend and I are trying to plan a New Year's Eve for ourselves. We've got as far as agreeing to cook dinner together at Swan's End. Does anyone have some fun, creative, relatively cheap suggestions for a good way to spend New Year's Eve? I can't be up all night or drink much because I've got family stuff to do the next day. What are all you people doing for New Year's?
The best revenge I never wrought Around this time eleven years ago I got dumped. I won’t get into the hairy details, but the way "Shane" chose to do it involved him simply cutting me off with no explanation or farewells whatsoever, my being stranded out of town and stood up on New Year’s, and my not getting the keys to my apartment back. Of course it doesn’t matter now, but I still regret that I never used the perfect revenge plot I concocted shortly thereafter. Yeah, yeah, I know, revenge is bad, the best revenge is living well, etc. But this was a scheme so diabolically elegant that not doing it seemed like leaving a Mozart sonata unperformed.Read more...

Judging from the first single, the new Polyphonic Spree album is going to be pretty cool.

They've also done a great cover of the Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way."
Danielson - "Did I Step On Your Trumpet?" (YouTube) This is one of the more accessible songs from the weirdo-Christian musical collective that goes by the name Danielson Famile. I love lo-tech videos like this.
Today is what the DJ's call 'Hump Day,' and it's about 3:15, so it's that 'Hump Hour' when the end is just barely in sight, so here's something from the land of classic rock work force blocks to get you through to the end of the day. If that dosen't work then this will.
Anybody got any suggestions for cleaning a burnt slow cooker? I left the squash in there too long, and there is lots of rock-hard burnt squash in there that isn't coming out in spite of extensive soaking. Ideas?
MeFi hates beagles... So what kind of dog should I get? Our household consists of my husband, myself, our 3 year-old yellow lab, and two cats. I've got a hankering for another dog, and we're considering a beagle. But my AskMe question has met with discouraging results. Are any bunnies beagle owners? Or can anyone recommend a beagle-size dog that's good with other dogs and cats?

In 1946, Boris Vian came to New York. He made the trip from France by submarine, caused a small international incident upon arrival, and had lunch. Then he ventured forth to discover America. He ran into Hemingway but didn’t recognize him, and failed to say hello. He went to see the Empire State Building, only to discover that it had recently been demolished. He came across the Surrealist André Breton living in Harlem camouflaged as a black man. He spent a morning sitting in front of his hotel, hoping to see a lynching, but was disappointed. Or so he said in “Impressions of America”. In fact, Vian never visited the United States, except in his own imagination (.pdf).

Looking at other people's art, or science, or sports or whatever used to inspire me. Now it kind of depresses me, especially if they're younger than me. This is a normal function of encroaching middle age, I'll assume. Maxine Sullivan. Yesterday I picked up a bargain-basement 3-CD pack called ‘Jazz Divas’ featuring performances from (mostly) the late ’30s and early ’40s. Most of the names were familar to me: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Lena Horne, Peggy Lee, Anita O’Day… Maxine Sullivan’s, however was not, but, what a great voice… If you like that sort of thing, then you should watch her sing Ace in The Hole and I Can’t Get Started (two 1958 perfomances on youtube).

Two part question about alcohol: Part 1) Can open gin go bad? My boyfriend just gave me some gin that has been sitting around, unsealed but capped, for probably years. Is it okay to drink? And Part 2) How do I find out the value of a bottle of vintage port? He also gave me a bottle of 1980 vintage port. I suspect it may be worth a significant amount of money and if that's the case, I don't want to just crack it open 'cause I'm thirsty. I googled it but can't find anything.

I only spoke for a minute or two, thankfully. Better yet, I won't get home in time to watch it.

The AK Miller Auction Consider the strange story of Alex and Imogene Miller of East Orange, VT. They eked out an existence on a small farm. Alex would scrounge rusty nails from burnt buildings to repair his roof. After their deaths the local church took up a collection so they could be buried in the churchyard, and the state began the process of taking the farm for taxes. That would have been the end of a sad story, except.....

*for the non-vinyl-literate youngsters in the house: ep = extended play, a type of vinyl release that had more songs than a regular single, but fewer than full-length album. Yes, I am old.

Advent Devotional, Day 3. I realize there hasn't been a lot of interest in the series so far, and I promise that I'll stop mentioning this every day. But the one for December 3 happens to be written by Mrs. Doohickie.

Happy Birthday, dear bunnyfire! Happy Birthday to you!
Help me find cute and yummy schtuff. I love jbox, and wanted to buy some of the gums and candies and whatnots they sell, for stocking schtuffers for Christmas. So basically I'm looking for Japanese snacks, or even Archie McPhee-ish foodschtuffs. I was in the process of placing a big order with jbox but before the submit button I got a message saying they aren't guaranteeing shipment in time for the holidays, so that's out. Any other online places that sell unusual and not too expensive yummies?
Oh, spread eagle. I get it. Are you like me, are your genitals not humorous enough? (NSFW)

We're having a stupid debate. If one were to use "netflix" as the term for a video rented from NetFlix, which is the best plural form?

My best friend insists on using netflixes. I say netflixen is better.
