I can't stop listening to this very old song. It's called The Ghost and it's sung by George Formby, who was huge in the states (and I think, in his native England) in the 30s and 40s. This song is so evocative of that era. It's Halloweenie, a bit creepy, charming, and weird. I love it. Lyrics.
Weird!

(For some reason, his voice reminds me of the old guy on Benny Hill.)

Does the 'hush' on the lyrics, sound like 'oh shi' to you?

Yes! It says in the wiki that he was fond of the double entendre, so maybe he was hinting at 'oh shit', or maybe he really was saying 'hush' and just dropped the H? That part fascinated me as well. Like I said, I can't stop listening to this. I found it on someone's MySpace a few days ago and there was no artist or info so it took me a while to find out who was singing.

I just downloaded a song by Formby called I Did What I Could With Me Gas Mask...can't wait to hear that one...

He's best remembered for this song in the UK.

When I was a kid they were always showing his movies and I used to watch them all - to a kid growing up in the early eighties he was like something from outer space.

One scene I remember really well was the one where he dangles from a rope ladder hanging from a plane and lands on a balcony. On this balcony he confronts Hitler: "'ere, take that you blighter!" *thump*

I'm sure for audiences during the war it offered a vicarious thrill but these days it looks really weird.

Anyway, there's a ton of his stuff available on eMusic which I've only downloaded some of so far. Also there are huge box sets available for next to nothing.

misteraitch, thanks for that video! I like the part where he says she pulls down her 'neverminds'. The comments under it are great too. dodgy, I had never heard of him before yesterday, believe it or not. I wonder if I'm an oddball, or if he's not known in the states these days?

Very cool! I just might use it on the current off-MeFi CD swap!

I can see a mild personal obsession with Formby coming on, too.

That was pretty cool, my five month old boy liked it too!

I think it would be great to play on Halloween when you open the door to trick or treaters. And shane it would be great on the swap...hah...
