That's horrific, but I'm not surprised the octopus survived. I wouldn't put anything past those fiendish amoral bastards. Probably used one of the penguins as a shield.

An octopus mother-to-be guards her eggs for up to six months, and she never leaves their side (nor does she eat) during the gestation period. She constantly fans water over the eggs to keep them viable.
And with the young'uns hatch, the mother dies from starvation and exhaustion.
A shrimp "husband" guards the eggs (of his several mates) for months, also starving. But the canny male keeps himself alive to protect the eggs -- by eating the last two eggs deposited.
It's a sad story, and I feel awful for the animals. But having said that, the comment "We had a penguin wreck." just cracked me up. I picture a pile up of penguins, as if they crashed while sliding down an ice floe.
