OH NO! Zoo crash! [More:]Penguins! Octopus! NOOOOOOO!

:(
Did any Pshae get injured? We were supposed to get a baby Psho at the Seattle Zoo this week....

That's horrific, but I'm not surprised the octopus survived. I wouldn't put anything past those fiendish amoral bastards. Probably used one of the penguins as a shield.

Aw, man, don't be ragging on the octopus like that!

An octopus mother-to-be guards her eggs for up to six months, and she never leaves their side (nor does she eat) during the gestation period. She constantly fans water over the eggs to keep them viable.

And with the young'uns hatch, the mother dies from starvation and exhaustion.

Octopi are the ultimate in dedicated mothers, yo!

I'm having a lovely time imagining a Texan and a Penguin regarding each other on a lonely stretch of highway.

The octopus is the Rommel of the undersea kingdom.

This was all over the local news tonight (I'm just south of Indianapolis). It's sad!

A shrimp "husband" guards the eggs (of his several mates) for months, also starving. But the canny male keeps himself alive to protect the eggs -- by eating the last two eggs deposited.

Sunny, over, or scrambled?

It's a sad story, and I feel awful for the animals. But having said that, the comment "We had a penguin wreck." just cracked me up. I picture a pile up of penguins, as if they crashed while sliding down an ice floe.
