02 August 2006

Sweet Lord, it's hot in New York, today! Anyone got a fireman's wrench so we can open a hydrant? (seriously, this is like the Augusts we used to have in Miami, only with less cocaine).
I hear you jon. It's Too Darn Hot.

It's too hot to even go to the pool. I'm hiding in the AC all day.
posted by jrossi4r 02 August | 09:53
I have the day off, but everything I want to do (this, for example) is outside. I guess hanging around outdoors for prolonged periods is unwise when there's a 116 degree heat index, huh? Even at the shore the other day there were small children crying about how hot the sand was. I saw one mom yell at her kid to toughen up, they were there to have fun, goddammit.

Yeah, I'm thinking about rioting later tonight. But whose window to throw the trashcan through?

How about the Olsen Twins?

Anyone got money on which borough will lose power first?
posted by sohcahtoa 02 August | 10:00
Queens already had it's turn and I've got a recuperating pip who needs her AC. I vote Brooklyn. Let those hipsters wilt under their trucker caps!
posted by jonmc 02 August | 10:01
hipsters still wear trucker caps? that's quite un-hip.
posted by gaspode 02 August | 10:03
John. There's actuall a hydrant open right around the corner on Vandam!
I thought you'd already taken a picture. lol.

shit, time for a smoke break.
posted by jonmc 02 August | 10:05
My workplace is dark - we're conserving energy, hopefully the rest of the city is doing so. 115° with the heat index. fu-uck.
posted by Hellbient 02 August | 10:06
I agree it's Brooklyn's turn. Anywhere but the Bronx. It already smells bad enough up here.
posted by sohcahtoa 02 August | 10:07
ah, just go over to Arthur Avenue and get an iced cappucino or an italian ice, dude. And we got some great hydrant pics. Good lookin' out, joe.
posted by jonmc 02 August | 10:17
compared to the last few weeks, when it's reached 100 degrees here in the UK, it's nice today - 71 degrees, raining, grey and gloomy. Nice typical British summer weather, and I'm finally getting some work done.
posted by altolinguistic 02 August | 10:17
mind you, working from home does have its upsides - no air conditioning, but the potential for nude working is always there.
posted by altolinguistic 02 August | 10:18
I have AC at home, so nude working would be a possibility, if only I could take my job home. But the idea of it might get the Urinal Talking Disarming Uncertainty Swinger all excited.
posted by jonmc 02 August | 10:22
Yup, that was me yesterday (working from home).

I want to play in a fire hydrant, too, jonmc- let's call 311 and ask that they open one in our neighborhood "because kids want to play in it". Then we can play!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 02 August | 10:22
If the power goes off in the Bronx, I'm going home. We need the a/c pumping to keep the lab at a reasonable temperature for our experiments to work. Higher than body temp = bad for labwork. Plus the smell.
posted by gaspode 02 August | 10:30
what would naked hydrant-play be called, anyway? Skinny Sprinkling?
posted by jonmc 02 August | 10:32
SCREW YOU ALL. BROOKLYN SHALL PREVAIL. ONLY LAME PLACES LOSE POWER.
posted by dame 02 August | 10:37
Also, this is my favorite website when it's hot. I feel the graphs really express the gravity of the situation.
posted by dame 02 August | 10:39
Hey, Queens and Staten Island have already taken their turn, and pips needs the AC for her recovery (and the idea of schlepping around Rego Park for nothing irks me).
posted by jonmc 02 August | 10:41
That's because they suck. Manhattan and Brooklyn don't suck, thus we get the power. I can't help it: it's the law. Also, this is the first year I'ev had AC. Please don't wish for it to go away you bad person.
posted by dame 02 August | 10:44
I thought I might venture out a bit today. A little Italian ice might be nice. I'm afraid my sneakers will melt into the asphalt, though. On pain pills, this could be dangerous. I might just stand there all day with pigeons on my shoulders.

Pigeons, dammit.

(hi dame!)
posted by Pips 02 August | 10:52
Pips, be careful out there. It's like rainforest hot out there. (also, Trader Joe's supposedly has that Mauna Loa snack mix I want. I'll pick ups something for dinner, too.)
posted by jonmc 02 August | 10:55
(hi pips. feel better. don't melt.)
posted by dame 02 August | 11:18
I know how you're feeling. It's mother hot out there, at least I have AC at work.

I DON'T HAVE AC IN MY HOUSE. The breeze was still hot and stifling at night. There's been a lot wandering around in one's underpants happening at my house.

Last night my roommates went and bought freezies at the corner store, which helped a bit, except that they melted pretty much the instant we left the store. The shop keepers there are used to our antics, but last night they were a bit perturbed because we were opening up the freezer cases and basically trying to crawl inside. I came up with a great idea in which we installed freezer cases in our house, lay them on their side and sleep in them like chilly vampires.

Can I gleefully suggest that the rest of the fucking world can go ahead and lose power and just leave NYC out of it? Does that reveal my true personality? GOOD. Fucking hot as balls.
posted by Divine_Wino 02 August | 11:31
Yeah, maybe I better stay in. A shower might be the goal of the day. Pain pills have kicked in; I tried to go without them today, but didn't quite make it. I think the pain in my lower right side may be from the ovarian cysts and not the gallbladder surgery. I'm still a lot better than I was, though.

Thanks in advance for picking up dinner, hon. You're such a love.

(thanks, dame : )

I can't wait until I can bitch about how fucking cold it is.

Hellbient, I love you. And I, for one, never complain about the cold. The cold, it is my love.

aw, the love right back atcha...

bitching about the weather, hot or cold, never gets anyone anywhere anyway...

I saw snow in the street yesterday. It freaked me out. Turns out someone had just dumped out a cooler or something.

everyone stay cool and you'll go far...
posted by Hellbient 02 August | 12:48
I kinda like it.

Just went out and it reminded me of a bus ride I once took from Suez to Sharm-el-Sheik to Nuweiba, on the Sinai Peninsula.

Only my corner of Long Island City is filled with big pink guys pinched into all-weather suits instead of grinning Bedouin with milky eyes and thumbs curved like olive roots.

It's almost hot enough for a nice long crime spree.
posted by Hugh Janus 02 August | 12:50
Yeee. Please send snow this way, also. :\

Fox's morning show, Good Day New York has had this silly running segment this week showing one of their anchors bundled up and calling for snow. On the t.v., you see "FutureCast" as opposed to "Forecast". Makes me want snow!

Yeah! What's a New York summer without a spate of violent crimes?

And a garbage strike! Bring on the garbage strike!
