12 July 2006

So my wife is one of the Real Hot 100, which means we're coming to New York City...[More:]August 11-13. This leads me to two questions:
1. How's about a meetup?
2. Any suggestions on where to stay for cheap-ish?

We're not finding many hotels for less that about $250 a night, and those that are seem to all have drawbacks, particularly shared bathrooms. The happenings are all in Chelsea, so we wouldn't mind being close to thereabouts. Thoughts?
Very cool, me3! Congrats to her.

1. Yes. It would be a pleasure to meet the illustrious me3dia.
2. Check out the outer boroughs. Not near tourist stuff so their cheaper, and manhattan's only a train ride away.

and congrats to the mrs.

Your wife is beautiful and wow do I love her purses and bags. I hope you two find something inexpensive and nice. It's a shame they're not putting you up for free, what with Oxygen and Yahoo being two of the sponsors.

Congratulations to Cinnamon!

Can I ask, which one is she?

Congratulations to your wife! And a huge BOO! that I will be in Montreal that weekend.

She's Cinnamon Cooper, on page two of the list.

Which burrough(s) would you recommend for easy access to the events, jon? She has to be at a brunch near Madison Square Garden on Saturday morning, and she's never been to NY before, so we're a little leery of getting too far away.

I will be at a wedding in FL that weekend. Ah well, have a fun NYC weekend for me!

Look for any location that has a straight shot on either a subway stop or a Long Island railroad line that goes close to or directly to 34th St. and 7th Ave. (Penn Station/Madison Square Garden). That way she doesn't have to change trains to get to where she's going.

Hmmm. There's a few cheap chain hotels in the Long Island City section of Queens, which is literally about 15 minutes to midtown by train. There's also an outpost of one of the chains (I forget which) on Houston Street in the Lower East Side Of Manhattan. But Long Island City/Astoria is close to the East River. Further out than that and it's a haul.

This map should give you a rough idea of the lay of the land. Both LaGuardia and JFK are in Queens but they're too far out to be convenient.

And yes, a meetup would most definitely be in order! Don't forget to post this info to MeTa if y'all are inclined.

If you decide to go the outer borough route, as jonmc suggests, you could do worse than Long Island City: it's a couple subway stops away from midtown, about 20 minutes from Chelsea, accessible to several train lines (E, F, G, V, N, W, 7); hotel prices range from around $130 (Best Western, in this crazy-looking old building) to $170 (Comfort Inn, near the Citibank tower and most convenient to trains). Of course, there's very little in LIC itself, beyond the PS1 museum, a terrific French restaurant called Tournesol, and Casa Janus, but it's Manhattan you're here for, and LIC is closer to Manhattan than most of Manhattan.

And congratulations to your Real Hot wife!

On preview, it loox like jonmc beat me to it.

Good advice on trains, TrishaLynn. It's not that we're afraid of the subway, we're just not familiar with the lines.

Jonmc mentioned the one on Houston St (b/t Forsythe & Allen); it's a Howard Johnson Express, price around $190/double room. It's in a killer location, easy access to all of the city and a great variety of cool places within walking distance.

I would just add that air conditioning would seem to be a major factor in accommodations.

We stayed at the Chelsea International Hostel on 20th between 8th and 9th. Great location. . .pretty crummy accommodations other than a/c in my (shared) room.

here is something. . .craigslist is also pretty active there although I struck out finding anything through it. . .you may have more resources and better luck.

That's really cool! Congrats!

We'll definitely check into Long Island City. Thanks guys.

OH yeah, the Howard Johnson on Houston is good. My sister in law and her idiot ex-boyfriend stayed there when they came to visit us once. Worked out very well. V. small rooms, but killer location. You can wander over to broadway and get a NRW up to one block away from Penn Station from there.

Anyone familiar with the Gershwin Hotel? They're apparently $160 a night.

Tell her congrats from me! Hooray for her!

me3dia, here is a recent askme thread on cheap New York lodgings ... lots of choices, and someone discusses the Gershwin.
