07 July 2006

This Post is Very Very Tired: Wednesday, got up at 6am EDT, took the shuttle to JFK. . the driver was pretty casual and we barely made the flight to DFW [More:]. . .got on the plane then sat on the runway for 90 min waiting out a thunderstorm (I was the only person in nyc with actual raingear that I saw during the past two weeks. . .I felt like a dork).

Got to Dallas. .missed the connecting flight to PDX but there was another one we barely got on a few hours later. . .hung out in DFW, a big storm came in, closing stuff down, the flight got cancelled, which triggered a rush out of security to the ticket counter to rebook. . .and running back and forth to coordinate with wife and daughter, etc. . .at one point they decided that my watch was suspicious and they took my aside and tested it for explosives. . .all they found was a couple years of gunk on the band containing my cooties. . .

Got on a flight on standby, got to PDX at midnight. . .and eugene around 2am PDT. . .

It is not a big deal to anyone else but I feel like it's my loss that I could not call a meetup. . .I DID hit Antarctica for a bloody mary one day. . .a good one.

Slowly getting pics into flickr. . .it'll take a week or so.
Glad to have you back safe and sound.

People from our part of the country will always look like dorks in New York. Fortunately, even though it's been over 18 years since I lived there, I haven't quite lost the habit of having lots of black in my wardrobe.

Yes, matildaben, but you greet everyone, including close family and friends, by saying "What the fuck do you want?"

I feel bad that I goofed around in your thread about planning meetup. But, I think the weekends of and around the 4th of July are probably some of the most difficult for this sort of thing. Tons of New Yorkers make plans to get out of the city. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed your trip!

It would have been cool to meet you dan. So did you have a good time? Highlights? Lowlights? The weather was *quite* crappy for you!

Well lots of highlights. . .Green-Wood (or whatever it's called) cemetary one morning by myself. . .didn't have the camera though. Free music at Prospect Park (Natalie McMaster) and Broadway Under the Stars, Pride Parade, all the museums, the street ambience in Chelsea, all the cool bookstores, Avenue Q, Wicked, a Met game, going to Film Forum late one night to see the Leonard Cohen movie, and having NYC be mentioned in it so much, all the great food (the Indian place at Grand Central being the best), some crappy food, the mermaid parade out at Coney Island, etc. etc.

A memorable time.

You can do that over the phone and get the boarding passes from the gate agent or a kiosk. If you're nice, you can get a gate agent for another flight to get you what you need as long as there isn't a line for that gate's flight. At least on American. I'd rather die than have to go through security at DFW if I didn't have to.

Well a lot of people whipped out their phones, but mine was low on juice, AND I had no idea about a number or how to do it or that it was even possible.

I ended up being ahead on standby compared to people who did it by phone (after hearing from my wife how stupid I was for not being ready to do it by phone) or people who whipped out their laptops and did it online. Gate agents were not a possibility.

DFW blows, in about every sense. Almost as bad as Denver in a snowstorm.
