Asheville Meetup Thread! [More:]Hey kids, it's comin' up! I'll make dumplins, and MGL will make the pie (that's pronounced PAH). So, hey, wanna update the wiki with your thoughts on the subject? What's the plan, Sam?
I'm still planning on coming...it would be nice if someone from the general Baltimore/DC area (or even someone from farther north) wanted to carpool.

You know, I really really wanted to do this, but it's not looking good. I kind of ran out of travel funds and here it is sneaking up on us. If something breaks my way I'll definitely post gleefully, though.

I, too, have canceled my plans to attend, as I need the money for drinking my way across foreign countries in September.

and judging by how much I drink, I'll need a lot of money

I'm still there, and since she's bought plane tickets, I know mats is there as well.

cmonkey, might you be drinking your way across Greece? If so, I have a perfectly uncomfortable couch you can crash on in Thessaloniki.

Al: Can you get to Richmond? rainbaby and I want you to ride with us.

Not this time, taz, unfortunately. The September Adventure will be taking me through the Czech Republic, Poland, Latvia and Sweden. Next year, though, will be my Balkan Adventure, and I'll probably go to Greece, too, if I can get a cheap flight from Sarajevo or Split or something.

I'll be there! If I can't sing around the fire with Miko, I'll be sorely disappointed.

YCCMA, another option might be if I picked you up (and is dano still coming?) on my way south (I'm in NJ). I'm almost definitely coming, barring some potential things that might get in my way.

Amro, you're in Jersey now, right?
If I could get myself to Jersey in the car (8 hours, 3 tanks)...then maybe...
posted by Miko 08 July | 14:36
Yep, I'm in Princeton. Come on down (Rod Roddy impression)! Are your parents still in Central NJ - can you combine Asheville with a visit home to help justify the cost of gas? I guess gas is the main expense of this trip, and food and drink, but beyond that I can't see it being too expensive (if so, my student loan-supported butt wouldn't make it there, either).

OK amro, it's a tentative plan, I'll stay in touch. My parents are still there, and that's right before my birthday, so it may all shape up as a good potential trip. Let me just see about getting time off, though.

Oh, and if we run out of money, maybe we can put on a little street performance. Busking can be quite lucrative.

Miko, could you take the train to Jersey?
posted by matildaben 08 July | 18:17
Believe it or not, it's actually cheaper to drive. Thanks, Congress! Keep cutting the public-transportation budget!

All ranting aside, it's not just the expense, it's time, too. I've got a wedding in Wisconsin the week prior and a race in Mass. a week after. So I would have to wangle some extra vacation days for this.

I'm being a terrible ditherer, I know. I'll come down on one side of the fence or the other by next week or so.
posted by Miko 08 July | 18:32
Heh, I know what you mean. It's cheaper to drive from Seattle to Portland than to take the train, also.

It's okay - frankly I'm having a little angst about leaving my sick cat for three days, especially if she gets sicker. So, I'm being slightly noncommital myself, and I need to decide for sure and stop saying that I'm "almost definite."
posted by amro 08 July | 21:57
I'm still almost-definite too. BoringPostcards, can you still offer me a ride from Atlanta?

I'm in, gotta check one thing, but I'm pretty solid. Question: hotels. Anybody made reservations yet? Moonbird or MGL, any suggestions? Email in profile, tell me what highway you are off of, etc. Maybe hotel dwellers could try to book rooms in the same hotel, any interest in that? Or am I the only hotel type/should I just take my chances on the floor or play it by ear?
