07 July 2006

Even *I* think this is mean... But of course I'm happily posting it here anyway. Take a look at pictures from the Wedding of the Year.
Like a car wreck... you just can't help but look (and say WTF? to yourself and shake your head in disbelief).

Poor schmucks.

I wonder who started emailing or posting their pictures on the net. You know it had to be someone they knew....
posted by Orange Swan 07 July | 09:31
I love them.

jesus christ people, what's the point of making fun of these kids? good for them, they got married, they look happy, I wish them well.

I think the bride looks radiant, and good for her for wearing comfortable shoes!
posted by muddgirl 07 July | 10:19
I like those bridesmaid dresses (really). Simple, classic, sassy color.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 07 July | 10:19
Here's the UK equivalent - the chav wedding.
posted by essexjan 07 July | 10:38
The chav wedding is almost better, essexjan. In the West Virginian weddding pictures we do not see any guests.
posted by Orange Swan 07 July | 10:54
Notice how cleverly the chav bride disguises her advanced state of pregnancy with layers of tulle?
posted by essexjan 07 July | 11:11
I love both of these. Such cute people, such nice families.

The backwards cap on the 6 year old in the Chav wedding was the style. The bride and the bridesmaids all look nine months pregnant in their dresses.

I bet a keg was tapped at each reception.

That chav set is amazing. Who knew that people go out in public like this?

Oh, my.

The day-glo green Ariel-the-mermaid outfit on the far left of the picture gaspode linked to really takes the cake.

Obviously you've never been to Dagenham.

I heard Natalie McMaster use "take the cake" as an expression when I saw her recently.

Is this a Canadian thing?

(McMaster is a fiddler from Nova Scotia. Or Newfoundland. Or somewhere up there.)
posted by danf 07 July | 11:40
How dare she try to upstage the bride!
posted by sisterhavana 07 July | 11:50
And TPS, I like the bridesmaid dresses too. They don't scream "bridesmaid" and they can probably wear them again.
posted by sisterhavana 07 July | 11:51
The bridesmaids dresses in the West Virginia wedding are truly not bad. Nice, simple lines, and they flatter all the bridesmaids. But although I like red, that particular red is just a little too garish.
posted by Orange Swan 07 July | 11:57
Hmm, danf, the "takes the cake" idiom doesn't seem to be distinctively Canadian.
posted by Orange Swan 07 July | 12:01
I've never even been to Canadia, and I've heard take the cake since I was a kid.

Best of luck to 'em all. I hope they provide loving homes for any eventual offspring.
posted by Eideteker 07 July | 12:16
I'll never make fun of anyone who found someone to love, and to love them, in this world. That's more than I've done. Good for them.

That's what you call a stagnate gene pool.
posted by puke & cry 07 July | 13:25
What amro said. (Not directed at Orange Swan, but at the glib JibJabbers who are surely hotter than all of us combined and could never, ever be made fun of.)
posted by mudpuppie 07 July | 13:26
Well what I meant was that, I have not heard "take the cake" used in years, and within the space of several weeks I hear it from two Canadians.

posted by danf 07 July | 13:45
Have you ever heard, danf, that the slang term for white Canadians of Anglo-Celtic extraction is "cake"? (I'm of mixed English/Irish/Scottish hertiage and considered a Cake.) The term's derived from "munjicake". I am not sure of the origin of that word though I think it means "cake eater".

So, in this context, "take the cake" from a Canadian could mean "take a Canadian";-) Or one of these;-) (now is that thread a coincidence or what).
posted by Orange Swan 07 July | 13:52
So when I say that "Orange Swan takes the cake," it's literal, and I am neither praising you nor dissing you, contextually.
posted by danf 07 July | 14:04
You know, thirty years from now, when they're celebrating the anniversary of their loving, mutually supportive, happy and sucessful relationship with all their happy and well-adjusted children, you all are going to be ashamed of yourselves.

In the meantime.... erm.
posted by jokeefe 07 July | 14:05
Holy crap, did the invitations to the chav wedding include the sentence "Dress code: ho"?

On the other hand, having actually spent a weekend in Blackpool recently, this is all too believable.
posted by jokeefe 07 July | 14:10
I know what you're saying, amro, but I was a divorce & family lawyer in Chavland for too many years to not be cynical.
posted by essexjan 07 July | 14:28
The male wardrobe decisions here aren't the worst I've ever seen -- no wookies! yay! -- I'm just confused as to the theme. Star Trek meets Prince of Persia?

Anyway -- they look blissed out and happy, and now there's a baby! (scroll down to "Uncle Trial")

I think if George and I had got married, this would've been his idea of a classy wedding reception. He loved 'em sliders.

All these people look pretty happy. I wonder how much time they spend ripping on other people's appearance.

Ah, I wrote stagnate instead of stagnant. I'm now equally as amusing as inbred trailer trash. Sorry.

The chav chick's crown is all out of whack, but I like her necklace.

And they all look like old-school Cinderellas, actually, with the weird over-the-hips split dress. Fairy princess wedding? At least so far I see no assless pants.
