06 July 2006

July is National Horseradish Month. Sing, O MetaChatters, the praises of this redoubtable root.
I fucking love horseradish. On bacon cheeseburgers, as a dip for fries. On roast beef. Mmmmm.

(it does have one bad side effect. you wouldn't want to share a cab with me afterwards, put it that way)

I've only had it with sushi. But thanks for calling this to my attention.

dame, the wasabi kind of horseradish is different than plain ole horseradish and tastes differet...

I like wasabi on sushi and horseradish on beer-boiled shrimp!

God I'm hungry.

Gah, yeah, speck.
These people and their food access.
Later I'm gonna need anything that goes with horseradish.
Or involving a fresh garden paradise with a seafood grotto.

I love horseradish in my kitchen. In my garden, not so much.

We got a bit of horseradish root mixed in with some other herbs that a neighbor kindly gave us. Horseradish is highly invasive, and hydra-like, any bit of root will grow a new plant. We now have a horseradish garden.
Back when I was a meateater, I LOVED to have prime rib and horseradish. Not horseradish sauce, mind you, but pure horseradish. Cleared out the sinuses!

When I lived in Florida, there was a bar on Dixie Highway that served a prime rib and jack cheese sandwich with horseradish on the side. I'd slather the meat with it and use the rest for the fries and wash it down with a couple cold ones.

Useta go to Lexington Market in Baltimore allatime. There they had a guy selling ground horseradish and ground coconut, and a mixture -- you could get it heavy on the horseradish, heavy on the coconut, or 50-50. Horseradish tastes surprisingly good with coconut, and I'm not sure if it's available anywhere else. I wonder how long it took the grinder fellow to try the mix.

Hm, I sort of meant to link to the recipe page. Oh, well.

The coconut idea strikes me as fundamentally sound. I will have to investigate that.

Gawd, I love horseradish. I like it in all forms, especially in hot Chinese mustard. (That IS what makes that stuff so hot, isn't it? It tastes like it...)

I second the sinuses. Also, like wasabi, it doesn't stick to the tongue the way a chile paste does.
