15 April 2006

I did a sort of horrible thing today ... [More:]I had a friend over for dinner, and cooked Cuban pork tenderloin (a Rachel Ray recipe) with rice, but realised at the last minute that I'd forgotten to buy salad, so there was no vegetable dish to serve.

I looked in the back of the cupboard and found two tins of ratatouille that had a best before date of Nov 2000. I opened them, heated them up and pretended I'd made the ratatouille myself.

It tasted fine, neither of us is dead of botulism and my friend is none the wiser. But I feel as if I will now be going straight to hell without passing Go and collecting £200.
i'm telling! i'm telling! ; >

Up until this very minute, it didn't even occur to me that Monopoly money in non-American countries would be in the form of the local currency.

Do they change the amounts for countries where 200 is a miniscule amount of money? Like, 200 forints isn't much at all.

The Monopoly board is different too, with London streets.

A friend of mine went on one of those this is Tuesday so this must be Istanbul country hopping guided trips after high school graduation, and she bought a Monopoly game everywhere she visited. They all had different streets and different money, but essentially the same everything else. It made for kind of a neat collection of souvenirs. In a related note, I used to have a Portuguese Monopoly game that another friend found in an abandoned building. I taught my daughter to play using it hoping that we would all thus miraculously pick up Portuguese: didn't work, although it is amazing how easy it is to play Monopoly in an unfamiliar language.

Huh! And yes, according to this, currency amounts do change depending on the country.

These situations are where the American "meat and potatoes" heritage comes in handy. I'm amused that it didn't occur to you to just ... not have vegetables.

of course, it's not much in dollars either - imagining you could buy real estate for $200 is pretty funny to start with. since they haven't adjusted for inflation, it doesn't seem like they'd need to adjust for other currencies. it's symbolic/relative.

When I was a kid my family used to play London Cabbie all the time. I always thought that was the English equivalent of Monopoly. Although I don't actually remember the game all that well so I may be way off; I probably haven't played it in 20 years.

As long as neither of you gets sick, I think you're in the clear, karma-wise.

Well, now that I've actually read my link and refreshed my memory, I see that the two games are really not similar at all.

It did occur to me but I felt the meal would be unbalanced with just protein and starch. And it would've been just brown and white, instead of all nice colours too.

Thank god for frozen spinach and microwave ovens. And just a little fresh nutmeg and cream.

It's a good thing you didn't serve expired pancakes. Apparently, they can kill you.

I have a Star Wars (original trilogy) Monopoly board and the landing spaces, money, etc. are quite different.

Why, yes, I am a nerd! Why do you ask?
