Don't you oppress me with your bourgeoisie ideas of what is and isn't music, you cryptofascist!
Okay, okay, the huffing-and-puffing sax solo in the version of Frank Zappa's "King Kong" on the Uncle Meat album: it's this incredible mix of virtuosity, comedy, experiment, and rawk.
Prince's guitar at the end of Purple Rain.
Jimi's at the beginning of Little Wing.
George Harrisons during While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
Eddie Veder and Chris Cornell singing Hunger Strike.
Kim Thayil's guitar during The Day I Tried To Live. The drummer, too, especially on the video-version.
The solo at the end of The Darkness' Love Is Only A Feeling, in the video.
Aretha Franklin, the opening piano chords of "Never Loved a Man" (and it's her on the piano) and then her world-weary: "You're a no good heart-breaker. You're a liar and a cheat. And I don't know why I let you do these things to me." Sweet sweet misery.
Ray Charles, "The Night Time is the Right Time", except I'm talking about when Margie Hendricks sings: "Baby. Baby. Baby. Oh Baby now." (of course the whole song is a masterpiece but I can't even think about that break without goosebumps. Sing your song Margie).
Etta James, "Stormy Weather". The woman can belt it like nobody's business but she's incredibly restrained in this song, in keeping with the lyrics and the mood of the song, but there's a point where she just can't hold it in: "keeps rainin' all of the time", then it's like that wore her out and she goes back to her hushed tones on the next line. It's so in keeping with the spirit of the song and more remarkable because she's so knowing although she was maybe 20 when she recorded it. More sweet misery.
I could go on forever. But I won't. I just needed to cleanse my mind after visting the "worst moments" thread above.
(the guitar lead in "While My Guitar..." is Eric Clapton, not George Harrison, BTW)
Oh tetsuo, good pick. And I absolutely love the scene in Rushmore that uses that song. The way Bill Murray's face goes from confused, to scared, to impressed, to terrified all in a split second is brilliant.
And for classical, it might be the opening chord of Blomstedt/SFSO's Mathis der Maler, and it just might be Berstein causing the loudest goddamn sound ever produced on earth at the end of his Shostakovich 7th. I don't even like the symphony that much, it's just the end keeps getting louder until it can't get any louder and then it gets louder. It's a violation of physical and natural laws, and you have to respect that.
Thanks jrossi4r, I loved that part of the movie too. Bill Murray had some really classic moments, another one was the pool scene, reminded me of the similar scene in "The Graduate", but perfectly skewed by the little kid swimming by.
Nina Simone singing Sinnerman, particularly the lyric 'So I ran to the Lord/Please hide me, Lord.' The note she hits on the word 'hide' is striking. And Leo Kottke, 'The White Ape,' during the second repetition of the main theme, in which he reaches a level of intensity it would be hard to describe or expect.
Wow. I can't think of THE one. But I'm sure it is either something Bob Dylan, Jeff Beck, or the Beatles did. Or myabe David Bowie, something off of Ziggy. Shit. OK, how about Keith Moon's scream in "Beck's Bolero" off of his Truth LP. And yeah, the last part of the Who's "A Quick One" as somebody said upthread. How about Dylan saying "Play it fucking loud" at the Royal Albert Hall show.
The drumming on Bowie's "Look Back In Anger" - a whole clinic could be devoted to that. The drummer in band back was dumbstruck when I played if for him.
Anything with Sally Ellyson's (Hem) on it. If I could pick the last thing I heard ever, her voice would be a strong contender.
"Will The Night", "Little Arguement With Myself" and "Whore" by Low, all have moments that are pure bliss.
The line "The thrill of being sheltered in your arms," sung by Chet Baker in his recording of "I Get Along Without You Very Well." It kills me every time.
In "Spirit in the Night," when The Boss sings "Well now Hazy Davy got really hurt/He ran into the lake in just his socks and a shirt/Me and Crazy Janey's makin' love in the dirt/Singin' our birthday song..."
And when Lionel Richie tells the Atlanta crowd during "Close to You" on Commodores Live, that "we started out last time with 9,000, then 10,000, then 15,000. Now, it looks like we're gonna have to find a larger place to play for the Commodores family, y'all!"
And also the entire Jerry Lee Lewis Live at the Star Club.
Mary J. Blige and U2 doing One.
LL Cool J doing "Mamma Said Knock You Out" Unplugged.
Bowie doin' "Boys Keep Swingin'" on SNL.
And -
Queen TOTALLY RULING at Live Aid!
