So I thought that interrobang's thread was awesome. But now I want to know what art folks around here like that isn't as traditional as painting and sculpture. Got a favorite piece of performance art? Aural Composition? Experimental Film? Art types I haven't heard of? You will tell me now!
It's fun finding new Toynbee tiles on street corners around Philadelphia. It's art to me, might be a prophetic message for someone else...

installations don't reproduce any better than paintings

installations really don't reproduce well...i'll throw in some mixed-media faves: Annette Messager, and Christian Boltanski, and Komar and Melamid, and Kara Walker, and William Kentridge, and Ilya Kabakov

(the last 3 are especially favorite) : >

I love the early short films and videos of William Wegman, particularly a thing he did for Alive From off Center with Michael Smith called The World of Photography. I really need to see again someday and probably never will. Curse my younger self for buying cheap VHS tapes and recording at SLP speed!

The sound art of The Hafler Trio. Boo to Iceland for almost killing him. Andrew MacKenzie frequently collaborates with various installation artists, but I haven't been lucky enough to see any of the work.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaax or the Discovery of Television Among the Bees

I used to have a purple T-Shirt that said "SWAMP LIZARD RACING SUBSISTENCE ARROGANCE" on it, and had a great drawing of, well, I suppose it was a Swamp Lizard who was into racing. Bought at a street art fair in Massachucetts from an artist who I believe was named Johah Rah (can't find any references online). Worn to shreds. May be in the "nice, but is it art" category.

I recently discovered Kentridge--there was a big show of his stuff on in Montreal last year--unbelievably wonderful stuff.

I've always loved stuff like this. (It's in the Art Institute, so it counts! : ))

There's this weighbridge outside my work that I absolutely adore. I've nearly photographed it and posted it here a couple of times.
I adore it because firstly, you don't notice that it's a work of art for about six months of looking at it, and secondly because every now and again you'll see some old couple looking at it with confusion and disbelief.

It's called "Steel Pennies Don't Come From Or Go To Heaven"

I'd forgotten all about Wax! That is one amazing, confusing movie.

Ohh I missed interrobangs thread.....link me!

and i've love love LOVE the sculpture being made by damien hirst, rachel whiteread and marc quinn! i also am very fond of maurizio catalan! oh and the chapman bros! i think all of these artists articulate a certain very "now" aesthetic by giving and making artwork that is very much of it's time and age. So while cold or glib there is a lot of emotion churning about i think.

ohhh there is more i must think!

i don't read! arg so not sculpture! i will return with a list!

but i have to say that all the sculpters i listed are more or less installation based scultpers....

mrs. pants, it's fine. list whatever you want.

for myself, I'll take this time to mention the brothers quay, whose clayand found art stop-motion films are some of the most unique and interesting moving pictures of the past 100+ years.
