This policy change (from "only disapproved if they're illegal") is news to me. I hate how Matt closes threads on Metatalk, sometimes.

No. It get's better from here.

Eh, I've had Matt close my stupid (not to say that this one was) metatalk threads.

I wear it as a badge of honour.

As for the answer, it's Matt's baby, he can raise it however he wants and the current policy makes sense.

What would be nice, though, is if there was an optional field where the anonymous asker could state a contact address so Matt/Jessamyn has the option of telling the asker why their answer wasn't posted or something.

The closing have really picked up, easily 1/3 now.

The policy seems inconsistent to me. Are "go see a doctor" posts deleted if they're not anonymous? I think the same standards should apply to all questions.

See "this thread" brought up from here.

Dunno. Anonymous questions that beg "go see a doctor" well, begs "go see a doctor/therapist/whatever." Thats why I think the optional contact info so the moderators can reply to the anon posting saying "go..." is a good idea.

This thread is closed to new comments.

Trying to keep the quality high on AskMe has to be difficult... If the adminstrator(s) were corresponding with every user who wanted to know why their post/comment was deleted, why an anonymous post wasn't okayed, how to present all of the above so that they don't break the guidelines, plus general questions of policy on the whole thing and trying to keep it all from being gamed by pranksters/spammers... it would be a full time job, just for AskMe alone.

I think Matt and Jess are trying to manage it by dealing with the most important aspects, but can't possibly have the time to engage in lots of conversation with individual users about every decision.

I'm not crazy about many of the MeTa thread closures, though, unless it's because the thread has devolved into totally useless flaming/joking. In this case, this thread would have been a good place to suggest that the anonymous posting page be updated with the new info.

Yeah, I think that, in addition to what taz said (which I definitely agree with), there is no real need for more explanation than is already given on the whole. People know why things have been deleted, even if they bluster a bit because they don't agree with the reasons. I also get a bit annoyed with some of the MeTa closures, but don't really hav anything in particular to add. But, damnit, I want to have my say! I am important and closing the thread before I tell you what I think is incredibly rude! The world deserves my opinion, damnit!

I think mathowie has got pretty clever about knowing which threads are going to turn to shit with no discernable benefit and which ones are going to turn to shit, but act as a pressure relief valve for the rest of the site into the bargain. Those ones are fun, but the other ones, not so much.

I have to admit, mathowie pissed me off for the first time ever, the other day. I made what I thought was a fairly polite and reasonable suggestion, and his response seemed to come over a little sarcastic. Well, when someone says to me "sorry, that won't be happening", maybe I just hear it in my head in a nasty voice. I don't know. I would have liked some explanation. Is it impossible to code? Is it difficult to code? Does he think it's a bad idea? I'm a bit behind on my web skills, but I'm sure someone could come up with some addition to .htaccess to achieve this instantly.

It seemed strange to announce domain-name tag pages, then a week later announce RSS tag feeds, but declare the two will never work together. Surely, in this Web2.0 world, an RSS feed on every relevant page is not too much to ask for. I didn't want to push it further, though.
